Excess Drake what do I do??

That is why you are amazing! I told my husband that reading your website and talking to you on here, I had imagined that you were much older than you are!
You are much more mature and 'adult' than the teenagers and young adults that I see around my place all the time. Very nice to know that there are still teens growing up responsibly and in a way that they can be proud of. Good job! My son and his friends are afraid of hard work, and keep their pants drooped down below their butt, and wouldnt know the difference between a cow and a goat, a chicken and a turkey. Its nice to meet hard-working smart thinking young folk!

(the muscovies that I got from you are doing wonderful, thanks again!)

I plan to eat my extra drakes. Some day. But for now, I've had good luck finding them homes with folks who either want pond ornaments (an all-male flock can work fine as long as there are NO females, and of course I make sure the new owner will feed & properly shelter them) or have lost a drake or wanted some of the genetics in my flock.

So if eating is out of the question, try craigslist (but don't give him away free--folks will lie for free snake food, and if he's going that route anyway you may as well do the job yourself), local feed store, and the buy/sell auctions here. I've had success through all those methods.

I have a problem with factory meat so we do three things to avoid it: Eat less meat, buy meat from local farmers whose practices I approve of, and harvest our own meat. So far, we've only eaten our quail but I really do intend to eat some duck some day. Like others who have posted in this thread, I believe it's an ideal way to eat meat (if you're going to eat it at all). But with the ducks, it's hard to conceptualize the cute little dabblers I raised from ducklings as something to eat, so it's more of a mental block.

Good luck. And sorry for your disappointment!

:O I knew it was called caponizing because a castrated chicken is called a capon and is supposed to be deliciously tender. If I caponize my ducks theyre getting aneastaised (sp?) and aftercare, and duck proof bandages! I can believe they would do it awake and without painkillers thats too cruel.
