Lemme tell ya, you can never have too many chickens.

So, about your ELs... got any recent pics? I'd love to see!

I have tomorrow off so I will see if I can get some pics of Bogey, Becall and Ilsa!

Haha, cute names!

I have a quad of Exchequers. They , are in my opinion, not show quality. They would do fairly well shown against other leghorns but I can't seem to get any better patterning out of them. I have crossed the hens with both my White leghorn rooster, SQ, and my Brown leghorn rooster, also SQ, and my Exchequer rooster, but can't seem to get the desired outcome. Occasionally I have some leg spots and I eliminate those birds as soon as it becomes apparent that they aren't going to outgrow the flaw. I have never heard of using a black leghorn and can't even remember the last time I saw a good Black, even at a show, that I would want to use with my Exchequers but , I guess I would be open to trying anything...My hopeswere that I could breed for the desired traits and eliminate the flaws through culling...It may work but it is very slow.

When you say better patterning, are you talking about the white to black ratio? Interesting. Maybe the Black would help not to ruin the coloring, which is why it was suggested. It sounds like breeding and culling would take longer, definitely. I'm thinking that breeding in another set of genes would help making things move along faster, instead of breeding and hoping to get offspring that have the desired traits among a set group of genes. But then again, I don't know much about genetics, so I can't say too much there.

2001 is correct....I have checked and can't find them as an addition. I am an APA member and through the years have gotten and saved all the addition/update pages that cam in the mail...And still I can't find anything....So I based my own opinion of my birds on the Dutch standard. Again I think mine are very nice as "leghorns" but could use some work as exchequers...I would like to see better legs and a more crisp pattern....Now if I could find the APA standard I could compare them to it.

O.K. Layira,

I worked on the coop and the pen for about four hours this morn/afternoon. Took some pictures of all the chickens, but especially some of the ELs just for you!

Bogey

Ilsa or Becall...I can't really tell unless they are side by side, Ilsa is smaller!

Another of Ilsa or Becall...still can't tell...maybe even the same bird!

And finally Ilsa wanted up on my lap when I was crouching down taking photos, but I had to make her get down because she was hogging the frame! The other two in the photo are Easter Egger girls.

I know they are not show bird quality, but since I am not going to show them...I just love black and white!

I have not had Leghorns before so I can't tell if their demeanor holds to the typical EL. I have several other breeds and these are the most curious birds by far. All three of them are very nosy. They all love to be petted and held. They can be a little excitable at times too though. All in all pretty good birds!

Yeah, I thought so. We have that edition here at school and both me and a friend scoured it to find them, but we couldn't either. Really? That's pretty weird they don't have them listed.

The Dutch standard? Do you think it would be any different from the standard in the US? I remember reading something about the regulation for the Exchequer pattern, but I can't remember where I saw it.

It would certainly be nice to have something to work off of.
