Exchequer Leghorns

Taken from "Poultry Genetics for the Nonprofessional":

Generation notation:

The original members of a mating are referred to as the parental (P) generation. The first generation of progeny from the parental cross is referred to as the first filial generation, F1. The progeny of a cross in which one or both of the parents are from the F1 generation is an F2 generation (F1 x F1 = F2) and so on.

So in other words, what blackdotte was saying is, breed an Exchequer and Black Leghorn together to get rid of the mottling on the legs, and then breed their babies together to bring out the original pattern....am I right?

Ok good, just making sure I'm understanding. Chicken genetics are a bit different than what I'm used to.

Layira,

What is it you are used to???

LOL. Not sure if I want to concentrate all that hard on my exchequers, that and I did a cursory search for black leghorn hens for sale and didn't really find any. Not up on the market for Exchequer Leghorns to know if there really is one. Really don't want to go the chick/hatch route especially just for one or two. Have been doing that (brooding) since March. My exch. are 8 weeks old now. They are actually the friendliest of my 13. Bogey the cockerel loves to be held and Becall & Ilsa are very nosy!

Well I was...am... a horse person, before I became a chicken person, so I'm more used to the horse genetics which are quite a bit different.

I will be getting a trio of Exchequers the end of June and I was hoping to try and start a little breeding program with them. I want to show them, but I didn't think they were accepted into the APA. Since I've been told they are, I want to get them up to standard (no mottling on the legs for instance). Apparently they're pretty popular, I think it would be nice to be able to sell hatching eggs and increase the population of them.

Your EL go broody? Haha, chickens are funny huh?

No, my living room went broody!! Ha Ha 3/17 I bought 8 EE and since have sold 4. Then my daughter wanted some silkies so I surprised her with 4 of them 3/22. On 4/5 I got the 3 EL's, a red star, an austalorp, a PBR (and I don't mean Pabst Blue Ribbon), 2 salmon faverolles, and a cuckoo marans. Can you tell I was going for colored eggs? Then on April 28th I got 10 BLRW and 9 Blue Wheaton Ameraucanas! I am growing out the last batch and only keeping about 6 or 7 of the best. Probably still too many birds!

Haha! Wow, quite a mix of birds! I'm betting they're a pretty bunch!

Lemme tell ya, you can never have too many chickens.

So, about your ELs... got any recent pics? I'd love to see!

I have a quad of Exchequers. They , are in my opinion, not show quality. They would do fairly well shown against other leghorns but I can't seem to get any better patterning out of them. I have crossed the hens with both my White leghorn rooster, SQ, and my Brown leghorn rooster, also SQ, and my Exchequer rooster, but can't seem to get the desired outcome. Occasionally I have some leg spots and I eliminate those birds as soon as it becomes apparent that they aren't going to outgrow the flaw. I have never heard of using a black leghorn and can't even remember the last time I saw a good Black, even at a show, that I would want to use with my Exchequers but , I guess I would be open to trying anything...My hopeswere that I could breed for the desired traits and eliminate the flaws through culling...It may work but it is very slow.
