Hi, I am a Brit Expat living in the Colombian countryside, I moved here 9 years ago, my Wife is Colombian.
We moved to our current property two weeks before the Pandemic broke, so I have had plenty of time to work on the property.
We have about 2500m most of which is covered in Avocado trees, which my wife is running as a small business.
Being out in the country here, has it's own challenges, especially with security, we have the usual security fencing, alarm, solar lights, dogs... It sounds like overkill but for a foreigner here it isnt, I would really like an early warning system at the back, and have been researching geese. I come from farming family, so I am not a complete novice, just with geese!
The problem I have is getting any information locally, when I planted apple trees I went to one garden centre after another, I asked what types they had and every one said "red or green", I ask locals what type of geese they have and they say "It's a goose", no wonder I am going bald! I have seen a couple of ads that refer to African geese, so guess they are in the majority.
I have more than enough land, I can secure them at night by bringing them into the secure area nearer the house, where I would build a coop, which is no problem as my main hobby is carpentry, in the day they would be in a fenced part of the orchard, if Avocados aren't a problem, they would have shade from the trees, and I have an open store in that area as well, they could use during tropical storms. The only problem I forsee, is a family of possums that live at the far end of the orchard, but again I dont know if they would be a problem or not.
As time progresses I am sure I will have other questions, but any information would be gratefully received, I am always open to learning whatever the subject.
