Expecting chicks week of Oct 1?

awww so cute, are those marbles in the water dish? i was told to try that and keep forgetting to add them ....gotta remember to do that in the morning....so I am expecting the girls to be here in the morning ....

I was going to only use the blanket during the outdoor parts of the journey from the post office to the car etc etc...I assume they come in boxes with holes and the cold air would be kind of shocking...

One more night!!!!

I am so scared that someone might be dead...part of me is fearing the moment I open the box...

The marbles in the water will not be necessary in a few days. but every once in a while you'll hit a run of chicks that the humidity has fallen on during incubation. These chicks have a syndrome to want to crawl back in the egg. They find teh water dish and it reminds them of the inside of the egg and they will curl up in it and drown.
Also sometimes you will run across a super aggressive line of chicks. that will litterally wait till another chick is drinking and jump and stand on their heads and drown them. I find this alot when hatching out several different batches of Game Chickens for other people.
Considering the size of the box. a light windbreaker or sweater just to keep the wind off of them is enough.
REMEMBER Electrolytes in teh water is CRITICAL to the welfare of shipped chicks.
If you don;t have any electrolytes.. use regular old green gatoraid ( premixed , bottled ) in a 50/50 mix with water.

I've got sav a chick mix electrolytes..just waiting for my phone to ring before I mix it. I had the brooder all heated this morning. You just made me wonder if chicks are sized very differently at first...I mean standards not bantams etc ...

Thanks for the info :)

I put my 16 RIR eggs into the hatching tray this morning.
I'm setting more Saturday noonish time. Hopefully I'll have more quail to hatch as well if the man brings more to auction Saturday morning.

Mine are arriving as I type. 11 of the 16 so far. and I did not candle them so I have no idea if the rest are even fertile.

Wow, great rate. They look healthy...I can't wait to try and hatchmy own...just not liking the idea of getting eggs shipped to me.
