What is the quality of their chicks like? I ordered 26. I am wanting to show them in 4-H so they don't need to be perfect, just a little better than ideal's birds. For the price they should be.$93 for all of them!!!!!!!!! What do you think?

Cant help you, but I did show some from Ideal last year, and took home peoples choice award and best of breed OEGB and best in show bantam.

I'm guessing that quality from a hatchery is the luck of the draw. It depends on which breeder the hatchery gets the eggs from. The MM catalog has photos of people winning prizes with their MM chickens, but I have to wonder what type of shows these were. If they were small, local shows they may have won because they were the only entry of their breed!!! If you want to show, perhaps you should consider getting your chicks from a breeder - maybe someone on this board can help you.

I've gotten over 80 chicks from MM and I just ordered another 50. I've always been happy with the way they arrived. I've lost only one per order of 25, but they always add extras.

Howdy, I believe you'll be very happy with the Murray McMurray Hatchery. I've used them twiced now and last spring I had ordered 6 WCBPolish and 6 Salmon Faveroles along with Buff Orps and Dark Cornish. Well the Faverolles and half the Polish Bantams died within two days. I called the hatchery and was surprised when the lady told me that they would resend the 12 bird I had order and that they would pack them with other chicks to make up the nessarsary shipping order of 25. I now have white and black Cochin, Porcelin, Frizzled, Jap, and brahma bantams. They are a quality operation and sure have made me happy!

Good Luck with your chicks,

Did any of you order the special free chick? What did you get? How were they shipped? In tiny boxes w/ hay stuff like ideal's or what? sorry, ideal is the only hatchery i have experience

I have never gotten anything but healthy, vibrant and thriving chicks from McMurray. I don't buy from any other hatchery for my laying stocks.

I think I saw a thread on this forum a while ago that had a poll about which sex people were getting as the "free rare chick." I remember some people got females, but most got males. The one time I got a free chick, that's what I got, too. The breed I got was an Egyptian Fayoumi. The most notable charactoristic about that breed is that the males start to crow at an "amazing" 5 weeks of age.
