Experienced Trader Joe hatchers

Grand total of 2 TJ eggs hatched out of 5 developing. Buffy moved to another nest and abandoned the other 3 eggs

so I just assumed they were bad. (I didn't have the heart to do eggtopsies...just trusted Buffy's instinct.)

* Just an observation...I think more would have hatched in an incubator because it would have been more sanitary and there would have been less jostling about (from Buffy and the other hens). Overall, a great experiment that I might do with an incubator in the future.

These white leghorns have little combs already. I sure hope they are pullets, though!

Here is a picture of Buffy, the two TJ chicks and a Welsummer chick she adopted as her own:

1 dozen trader joe fertile eggs into the hova bator forced air with auto egg turner on Friday night 5/4. Today, I see at least 7 with veins, 3 clear, and 2 dark but no veins. Fingers crossed for 9 hatches!

WHAT THE HECK AM I GONNA DO WITH 9 MORE CHICKS! I ALREADY HAVE MORE THAN I HAVE SPACE FOR!

I guess I will have to give some away, or sell it on craigslist!

Don't count your chickens before they hatch!

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Good luck on those 9 developing babies.

Put 12 Trader Joes Fertile eggs under my broody French Copper Maran on May 26th. Reduced down to 10 eggs earlier this week as 2 had no development at all. When candling, I saw movement in 8 of them so have been hopeful all week but was also worrying as we have had high temperatures the last couple of days. Around an hour ago I went to visit the girls and the broody was off the nest so I got to peek. One pipped and one with a penny-sized hole with a beak busy working on it's escape route!!!!!

Florence is back on the nest so no hope of anymore peeking for now but hopefully the sweet sound of a peep, peep or two before nightfall.

- could be a long night!

I am SO gonna try this. Being new, I'm full of questions, so here we go ! :3

Do they have to have FERTILE on the carton or will the regular organic ones hatch? I live in Michigan, so everything is real natural here. Right up the street is a farmer Joes and right across from it is Whole Foods! I also have just one from a 100% Dutch farm in my little home made incubator now. Not expecting anything really. My incubator is basically a small box with a 75 watt heat lamp and a towel ... Any ideas, folks ?! Can't afford commercial sadly :( also, will Whole Foods eggs hatch? I'm sure Kroger won't hatch, they're pasteurized :\ wish me luck !

Yes, the carton MUST say "fertile". Most commercial hens are not with roosters so the eggs aren't fertilized and therefore wouldn't develop. If you buy eggs from a local farmer/neighbor who has a rooster with the hens, the eggs can be incubated as well, maybe cheaper than the store bought ones.

Can you borrow an incubator from someone? Check out Craigslist for a used 'bator? Also, read up on homemade incubator and candlers. Otherwise, you may end up cooking clear eggs for 3 weeks and end up with a stinking mess without knowing what is inside. Good luck!

We wanted to try this, but our Trader Joes doesn't sell fertile eggs. I practically checked all the egg cartons at our store! Oh, well. That's pretty cool though.

So now I'm worried.
https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/698879/trader-joes-fertile-eggs-started-8-11-12

I didn't let the eggs settle for 24hours before putting them out in the nesting box
I let them come up to room temperature (maybe 4hours) then put them in the nesting box
mrs broody (little brown) was probably on them within the hour

what happens if you dont let them settle?
im also worried that she isint turning them - i havent been monitoring where the markings are on them but every
time i look at her she is just sitting there, not "rearranging"
