Explain the F1-F5 ratings please!

I am not terribly new to chickens, but quite new to breeding with a purpose, and I am trying to educate myself as much as possible. I see a lot of F1 and F2, 3,4,5 business going on, but I am not sure what that is actually referring to. Can anyone give a quick explanation? Thank you so much!

Why do they use an F ? Would make more sense to me to use a G for generation, example G1. What does the F stand for??

If I recall,it is a latin term (fila ) used in science/genetics.The filial generation.
