Explaining Chicken Math

kemclaughlin, that is GREAT! I don't blame you! It's hard to resist it with all the different breeds--especially when you find one you want! I can't wait to see what your house will be like by the end of this all! (Probably like mine ;))

And OH NO!!!!! The Wheaten Ameraucanas I wanted? THEY HATCHED!!!!!

I'm trying to casually gauge my boyfriend's interest or complete disapproval to me driving out there tomorrow and picking them up.... Not to mention the integration problems I may have (but I can find a solution for that, right?!). The problem is when I told him, he just said, "Oh really?" and started to fall asleep. I've considered saying, "If I get rid of a typewriter can I have more chickens?"

But I want them :( Every day I've confinved myself I'll keep a BBS Ameraucana rooster. But it would be SO much better if I could keep a Wheaten rooster! Right? And to do that, I would have to buy wheatens....................
Yup! You really need the Wheatons!

The dog (that tiny thing in my avatar) has to help me with the chicks and chickens. DH is afraid of hurting them. It is a reality with him too.
DH is terrified of snakes. I always thought bikers liked snakes.
My husband is also afraid of snakes...wow. Lots of odd fears going about...

This thread is awesome!!!!! Chicken math is the best :D

My chicken math story is simply my DH saying "NO CHICKENS!" (We live in a very suburban neighborhood). That same day I came home with 3 silkie chicks ;) 0=3
Now that they are laying, my DH wants to bring a friends roo over for the weekend "just to see if we can get chicks and maybe we will keep one..." Lol! Man chickens are addicting!!!!!!!

Oh, and I haven't built the chicken coop yet. That is so enabling since I can just tell myself, "I'll just have to make the coop a little bigger", right?

Daughter wasn't even mad at me for getting 2 more. Though if I do it again I think I might be in trouble. I'd just better stay out of farm stores for a while!
This thought process is very dangerous!! It's how we ended up with 20 chicks!

My family is just over a year into raising chickens and chicken math is hitting us hard! We originally planned on having 6 laying hens. But while at the store we decided to get 12. Just in case some died or turned out to be roosters. Well, we did not have any chick casualties and we had 9 hens and three roosters. The three roos were just too much for our nine girls so we decided to cull the two meanest roos and keep our roo named Casanova. He loves his ladies. :love Here is where the chicken math kicks in. Over the fall and winter months we start searching all over the internet and discovering all of these awesome breeds! SOOO many beautiful birds. So much encouragement from BYC! So little will power! This spring we tried to control ourselves. We agree that we would only get chicks from the feed mill and we would only get another 6 laying hens. But then we walked into TSC during chick days and it all over. We only got 8 chicks that first day. But then a couple days later they had a new breed! :weee Had to get six more! Two weeks later, ANOTHER awesome breed!!! :celebrate 6 more. Now some of the oldest chicks might be roos! Well, that is no good! Now we have no choice but to get another 6! :idunno WHAT HAPPENED!!! WE USE TO BE NORMAL! Now all we talk about at my house are chickens. There has even been talk of getting 25 meaties. Anyways, we are now drawing up plans for a coop addition come summer. So this is how it is going. 6=12-2+8+6+6+6+25?= 61.......... 61!!!! But meaties and roos don't count so I think we are closer to 30. At least we sell a lot of eggs! :yesss:

Nobody outside my chicken addiction enjoy talking to me now. Plus I'm getting nicknamed the crazy chicken lady & the butt of jokes. Oh well. If they only knew what they were missing out on. I'm in search of a few more breeds, but trying hard to wait till this first two batches in brooders go to coops. 1 goes tomorrow! I forsee some Marans & Wyandottes in the near future lol
