Explaining Chicken Math

Theres this really "horrible" law here that allows us to only have 15 adult chickens per acre BUT non adults count half. On top of that if your adult chickens miss being on your property for one day, or part thereof, out of 365 days, they dont count.
So I am trying to see how I can work this chicken math to take my chicks on a day trip sometime this summer. :)
I have 5 acres so that means i can have 75 SWEET!

DO NOT let my husband see this...

So far we are at... min. of 6 so I had to get 8. Which I explained off by saying, well it could be worse, I could have ordered 25 from McMurray. Then was asked why our coop is so much bigger than the neighbors, who have 8 more chickens than us... I haven't fully explained that just yet.

I decided chicken math wasn't my best subject so we just started out ordering 100. When we got there we bought 2 more. Yeah. I didn't tell the wife that.

All but 4 going to coops starting this weekend so I told DH that my brooders would be empty thus I could get my Lavender Wyandottes & Dominiques. He said he's hiding the money & hog tying me in trunk lol BUT BUT!!! He may put up a fight, but knows I'm gonna get them lol Especially if we land the house on 52 acres!

Now that is bad!

Oh, what I could do with 52 acres!

I went to TSC just to go potty during a trip. They had temptation. I left to continue the trip, and talked myself out of it. DH asked how many I was getting. He apparently missed that I had decided against more. I decided on 6 Wyandottes (tried for girls. They look gold laced to me) because you never know M/F. I was going to get 4 White Rocks because I have all the other "Rocks" that I know of. Including a WR mix. Then a Leghorn was taken out of the center bin bloody. I took her to keep her safe. When I looked into the bin I saw that the others were all much bigger though the same age (supposedly). I settled for 3 WR (because you can't get an odd number!), The baby died a few hours later. She was in bad shape. The other LH had really been beating her up.
I had gone up to 27 last year, was down to 17 the beginning of the year, lost one to egg bound, got 5 2 months ago because math happens, got 6 chicks 4 weeks ago because TSC causes chicken math, got 10 more (same reason) and lost one. I swore I never wanted more than 30, but was happy with 16. I now have 36. That is okay! I have another coop to hold 8 (room for 38) and I am getting another coop in a few weeks (room for 2 -4 more!). But... DH is also getting me an incubator.

I am new to this chicken math but I think I have it down to a good start. Ok so I had to order 15 minimum so I ordered 5 red sex linked hens, 5 black sex linked hens and then decided I wanted some pretty ones so got 2 Lt. Brahmas. Still needed 3 more so found the cutest white chickens called Cochin. Got 2 hens and since the roosters are supposed to be relatively quiet got 1 White Cochin rooster. The hens cant be left with no love life after all and since Cochins and Brahmas like to brood they are gonna need something to brood on. Right? Ok now that is 15 but McMurrays sends another one as a freebie so that makes 16.
Then I went to talk to the city manager and I can have 30 chickens. We thought it was only 15. Now that is just not a good thing to tell me especially since I already sent my order in.

Reading about cochins makes me want a Blue for breeding purposes so talked to them a bit ago and had them add a single blue cochin female to my order.
I think that shows remarkable restraint especially since I really want a frizzled cochin but not bantam. Sighs. Hope I dont run into any soon!

Last year supposed to get 25 meat birds for 8 weeks. Over two hundred birds and 17 breeds have called my coop(s) their home...current count 105 (but meaties have their visit to mr plucky set soon).

Lol I got one for ya. 3 years ago my husband and I were at tsc and on a whim bought chicks ( 2 Dominiques, 2 rir, & cr's)=6. 2 weeks later a friend gave us day old chicks, 4 rir's, and 4 white rocks= 14. 2 days after Easter my hubby came home with a present, 4 pekin ducklings, 4 mallard ducklings, 4 australorp chicks and 3 barred rock chicks= 21 chicks and 8 ducklings. My hubby builds a coop the next weekend. Fast foward a year and a half, we lost some to neighbors dog and lost 2 due to a frost. Brought us down to 11 hens and 5 roosters, 6 duck hens and 2 drakes. We went to a flea market and bought some bananas and 2 magpie duck hens. Fast foward to the present and we now have 14 grown hens (ameracauna, BR, Dominique, mixed, and RIR, Red star, EE, Leghorn,& Delaware), 2 grown roosters(buff orpington), 2bantam roosters(white game and bb red), 9 bantam hens(white game &mix), 31 chicks(all mix), &22 ducklings( mallard, pekin, magpie, 1 cayunga, and some mix). My hubby hid my incubator last week and says he isn't giving it back till next year. :-(
