Explaining Chicken Math

Start out intending to order 15 pullets. . . end up ordering 27. . .. .
Have the hatchery have some sort of hiccup or mishap and accidently
ship you an order that was supposed to go 2000 miles the other way. . . .
that order contains 50 pullets. . plus a couple extras. So start out intending
to get 15 and end up with **** near 80. . . .totally unexpectedly.

Are your Cochins bantams?  If so, don't forget bantams only count as 1/2 a chicken

Don't forget, if you wanted pullets and had to order a straight run, that's 50/50, so divide those by 1/2. If you should happen to notice one is a roo, don't be cruel and divide the poor thing in half, you must subtract a whole chick.

We lost one of our hens to a predator yesterday. My son & I were talking about how we need more chicks. Hubby said, "why do we need more?" Duh! We lost one. Must replace with at least 5 more. She can't be introduced to the flock by herself!

Keep going with all the ideas I'm learning more of this math every day.
Like today I was at the box store after a 150 foot roll of chicken fencing. So
obviously I had to buy two you know just in case the second would be
needed. I mean the chicken math works with everything having to do
with chickens isn't that right?

(can't introduce just one, love it!!)

Sounds good to me. If hubby has to stop in the middle of a project to go get more materials, he's frustrated. So...buy twice as much as you need. Problem solved.

Fast forward to, "Honey, I think we need to expand the run." "What's it going to cost?" "Nothing! We already have the fencing in the shed."

See...your idea is brilliant!

So sorry :( There is actually a lot of truth to that. I have a lone hatchling that I had hoped to have a hatchmate of some breed. It's been a week (chicken+ guinea; set at the same time; keets take a week longer) and no luck. I have another broody who is on a pile of guinea eggs as well, but a few more weeks for her.

I have several different flocks that roam- the smaller ones are hatchmates, less one lonely EE/bantam cochin mix that hatched with the last batch but is definitely the odd girl out. She is also often by herself. I tried her with the baby, but she got bored quickly- not happy to go back inside when she was used to free ranging.

My other six babies roam and sleep together inside.

So, I'd definitely say you need 6 more. That's the chick rule. ;)
