I have a hen who lost a foot to frost bite. The foot finally fell off (took 7 weeks) two days ago. Well... the bone is exposed and is bearing all of the weight. It’s pointy... my gut tells me it needs to be shaved or something.
Can anyone help?!

additionally, she has been sitting with her mouth open occasionally. She is eating and drinking. She is inside our house.
The foot is being soaked and bandages changed.

I would keep it covered with betadine and a gauze bandage until it dries up. Most chickens who lose feet need some padding for awhile until the stumps heal.
Does the bone seem too exposed? I worry that any skin trying to heal around it will be prevented from closing up. And also infection in the bone. :/

There is always a chance of bone infection, but without seeing a vet, I do not know of anything you can do. It may be too late as well since the wound is not sterile. It might help for you to do some research on older threads here where other chickens have lost limbs. Many of those threads I have read, chickens seem to do well after losing a foot. Is the other foot okay?
