Extermely weird Egg Problem. :(

So far my hens have laid two thin shelled eggs. Like there is no shell at all. I found the first one intact, and the second one was broken. What could be causing this??? I think it might be both from the same bird, since I found them both in the same nest box.

I've heard that that means they probably need more calcium. You can buy crushed oyster shells to help make the shells strong.

I wonder if that is also kinda normal for a pullets first egg or two.

If these are young birds just starting laying (like within the first month or so of starting to lay) it is pretty normal as their systems get up and running.

Otherwise, I'd make sure they have free-choice crushed eggshell and/or oystershell available.

A fright or sudden stress can also sometimes cause them to drop an egg before the shell has been put on.

They should be given free-choice oyster shell. They will eat what they need of it. I just put it out in a separate dish. If this is a young bird, it could just be her getting her egg-laying gear up to speed. You need to be VERY careful about collecting them if you do find them, because since they break so easily, chickens can get the idea to eat them...once that happens, you've got a problem on your hands, as they love the taste of raw egg.
