External pip to unzip!

I sometimes break just a few teeny bits of shell to check the membrane underneath. If it’s still veiny or very wet i leave it alone. If it’s dry I basically zip for them and let them figure the rest out. It’s worked well for me so far but it is always risky and a tough call. You’ve got to use your own best judgement.

Is the pip still pointed downward toward the floor like in the pic? And can you still make out movements, or hear peeps?

You can peck on the window, talk to it, sing to it, anything to keep it active so you can detect life.
(I have a magnifying glass beside my incubator to look for even the slightest movement of the shell or membrane)

Yes the pip is downward like in the pic. Update i made a judgment call after shining a light in there and seeing the membrane look dried out. I pulled it out and chipped just a bit of shell off, leaving the membrane, and put some coconut oil on the membrane. I am not experienced enough to tell if veins are absorbed so heres a pic of what i did. Ive def been checking every hour and talking to it and its been chirping! Its been 30 hours now. My secondary issue, opening the incubator i noticed my third egg has externally pipped in the wrong end of the egg (not the air cell end) ughhhhh!

I pretty much just did a minimal version of that. Makes me nervous! Check my other reply too i posted a photo. Since ive not done this before i cannot tell if veins are absorbed or not!

I can’t tell if I see blood vessels and that looks pretty moist. Is that after the coconut oil?

I think I’m only seeing outer membrane? so you aren’t likely to see the blood vessels thru there until you get to the inner membrane. But if it’s still active and alert, i think it looks good for a bit.
The thing to watch at that point is the membrane sticking to the bill. You don’t want it to stick to his bill and block off the nares.

I also see a little condensation, so it looks like your humidity is high enough that your quick opening of the bator didn’t hurt anything. You may have to end up doing the same for the other wrong-ender. Just go slow and don’t rip any veins and I think you will do fine. Gradual assistance....

Just checked on it this am and still no more progress. I chipped a bit more shell off and did see veins so i stopped and put it back in the incubator. Still moving and chirping. Its been almost 40 hours now! This little turd is really testing my patience! Lol but this morning is the first time i can see its beak out the hole so thats exciting

Am I correct in that it looks like it pipped away from the air cell? I don't see any air cell in the area where the beak is in the picture, I don't think.

Correct. It pipped just outside of the air cell.

In that case it's definitely going to take longer than a normal pip to zip scenario. Usually they internally pip, rest for up to 24 hours, externally pip and rest up to 48 hours and finish absorbing everything, then zip out. He never got the internal pip resting time, so that time has to be added now to the time he's going to spend resting and absorbing during the external pip period. He might have up to a full day of absorbing left.

Oh boy. So i could still have another full day left?! I assume now since ive chipped away some shell that i will need to continue to coconut oil the membrane so it doesnt dry out?
