Extreme Novice Question.

Are you sure that she layed it at 5:00 in the afternoon? Because that's very rare and really only happens if the birds are stressed out and lay 2 in one day.... The only reason I say that is because chickens can't lay past 3:00, not enough light left in the day...

Yes well the owners are not very thoughtful of there hens, they brought them down to me (3hr trip) in a bag and it wasn't very breathable, so yes they were stressed and i think she had been holding it all day, so i dont think he laid 2 eggs in one day.

Sorry, but this is not true. Hens need a certain amount of light stimulation to lay eggs, but they can & do lay at 5 pm. They won't normally lay at night, but they can finish laying after dark when the sun has gone down. In the summer they will lay even later.

My hens have been laying eggs late into the evening on a pretty regular basis for over a month now. It's not unusual lately for me to find a bird or two in the nests only an hour or two before sunset--one EE laid an egg as the sun was going down about a week ago, then hopped right onto a roost to go to bed. I don't know why they suddenly decided the evening hours were fair game for laying, but they did.
