9 month old French Maran. Her eye was swollen shut. She only opened it this much once I started handling her. Other eye is totally fine. Could this be just an eye injury or infection? Or the start of a URI? I have tylan soluble powder on hand I can start her on immediately. Rest of the flock looks fine so far.

If your hen had an URI you would see other symptoms, such as wheezing, sneezing, runny nostrils, gurgling, head shaking.
I recommend flushing her eye with saline solution, then apply Terramycin eye ointment in her eye as needed until healed. Just a little in the eye is all you need.

Eye infections of chickens can be caused by something getting into one or both of their eyes. Normally and in most cases "eye infections" in chickens are caused by a respiratory disease such as MG, ILT, IB or Infectious Coryza. This is because a chicken's sinus cavity is located all around the eyes, so when the sinuses become inflamed, symptoms show within the eyes. Unless your hen has swelling around the eye or any sticky discharge, then it's not respiratory related. I've found and attached a great photo below that can help you understand what I mean.
