Hi, I have been caring for my Barred Rock with an eye infection since August. One eye was really bad and that has since cleared but still looks damaged. The other eye since developed infection that stuck on her eye. I have taken her to the vet twice and can no longer do that. He told me to keep putting the Terramycin until it goes away. He did try to remove the stuff that is stuck on her eye but was unable to, that was beginning of September. At that time she had worms so he gave her something for that and since then she's had them again. I bought some Safeguard and gave her two pea size doses two days ago and have not noticed any today. What I had seen was small rice like things in her poop that moved. I am a total loss on how to get the stuff stuck to her eye off. Any suggestions? I rinse her eyes out with Saline drops a couple of times a day and put the antibiotic ointment twice. I started this week using Neosporin thinking maybe the other stuff is not working? I did purchase some natural product called Eyebright that is supposed to help with the moisture in the eyes. I only used it one day because I just do not know what I am doing.
She has been away from the flock since August and is in a cage in our garage. I try my best to keep her cage clean and I do let her out on our flower bed daily to have some fresh air and sun.
Can anyone help?

It sounds like she may have tapeworm segments in her droppings. SafeGuard won’t treat tapeworms. You will need a product with praziquantel, such as Equimax horse paste, to treat tapes. Dosage is 0.16 ml for a 5 pound chicken or 0.03 ml per pound given once and again in 14 days. Tapeworms have an intermediate host, and those can include worms, snails, slugs, flies, and beetles, so removing those may help in control. If you use Zimectrin Gold or other products with praziquantel, the dosage will be different. Just to be clear, if using SafeGuard for other regular chicken worms, the dosage is 1/4 ml per pound given once and in 10 days for only roundworms. Give it for 5 straight days for other common worms.

The white plaque over the eye probably is hard to get off. If may take irrigating the eye and using tweezers and QTips to try and remove it. I don’t envy you doing that. The eye may be blind. I have no experience in this, but it seems to be a problem that others have posted pictures of.
