Eye problem on Ameraucana hen (respiratory issue actually)

Howdy All,

We noted tonight that one of her 4 hens is having a problem with one eye. There appears to be a section on her eye (closer to beak) that looks like small bubbles, and on the other end of that same eye, some hard looking "growth" that feels like a wart on a person.

7-8 months old.
Pine bedding in coop.
We have not done any type of treatment as of yet, and no other hens are showing any issues with their eyes.
We see no behavior issues, and she continues to lay eggs.

A Google search leads me to believe this is a Mycoplasma respiratory infection. Can anyone confirm?

Where can I get antibiotics for treatment if this is a correct diagnosis?

I bet steinhausers has oxytetracycline. If not c&s feed in Montgomery does. Sorry she is sick!

Backing up the upper respirtory diagnosis. Not sure if particularly microplasma, but supportive care is most important beyond antibiotics. This one will spread to the whole flock in my experience, but I agree relatively low calibre antibiotics in water can knock it out for the whole flock, too. Get them on vitamins and electrolytes. Often stress is the precursor to birds getting this, and it's been a long hot year in Texas.

Edited to add: yes, tetracyclines are a class of antibiotics to get rid of MP. They are over used and abused but still seem to be viable for these kinds of issues. Don't step it up to a less used class unless it proves to be treatment resistant.

How do I get them on electrolytes and vitamins? Can you recommend some specific products?

You can try to get testing to confirm mycoplasma (MG) through your state vet or poultry lab. Tylan 50 and 200 injectable (used orally) can be used to treat MG, as well as oxytetracycline. You can also get Terramycin eye ointment from a feed store, and apply 1/8 inch strip to the eye after cleaning the drainage from the eye. Tylan powder to add to the drinking water is available here:

Look at feed stores in the cattle meds for Tylan 50 or Tylan 200, and get syringes with 18 or 20 gauge needles to withdraw the medicien. Give it orally after removing the needle. They have been reportedly hard to find this year. How much does your hen weigh? Tylan 50 dosage is 1.25 ml or 1 1/4 ml for a 5 pound hen 3 times a day for 5 days. Tylan 200 dosage is 0.25 ml or 1/4 ml for a 5 pound hen 3 times a day.
