Hi everyone,

My 3 1/2 year old isa brown recently developed a swollen eye which she kept closed and was scratching it. When I had a look at it it seems to have a cloudy film over the whole eye. She is otherwise healthy and the other eye is normal.

Any ideas anyone ? Is it a cataract ?

Thanks

Nicola

That looks pretty bad. The bubbles can be a sign of mycoplasma, but the greyish color looks a bit like ocular Mareks disease. The film over the eye can be from infection. Do you see anything in the eye that looks like a small worm? I think she needs to see a vet for some good antibiotic eye drops. The only antibiotic for eyes in feed stores is Terramycin eye ointment which you can ask for. Have you ever had paralysis or an unkown death from possible Mareks before? I am not an expert, but I would say her eye is blind, but I would try to find the cause of her eye infection.

Thanks for the reply. I can't see any worms. Her sister died 6 months ago but the symptoms were different. I will try to get some eye drops, unfortunately vets around here don't treat poultry :(

Then you could try the Terramycin ointment in the eye twice a day. If you look online, you can find ciprofloxacin (ciloxan) eye drops at First State Vet Supply for around $25. That is a very good broad spectrum antibiotic drop.
