I got this hen today. She’s in overall good health other than her eyes. She told me she was blind, just want some opinions on what everyone thinks it may be? Both eyes look like this. I don’t see any discharge but she won’t really let me get close enough to look.

Can you get a closer photo of each eye? I cannot tell if they are shut or not from this photo, but if you can get photos of them open that would be quite helpful. Did the previous owner tell you if this was a recent development or if this has been lifelong?

I would look closely to see the eyes, if they are intact. It may be that the hen’s eyes were pecked out or damaged. It may be difficult for her to find food and water in a new place. Bullying could also be a problem. Why did you take her? It is best to keep a new addition in quarantine for a month, in case they show any signs of disease or parasites.

Welcome To BYC

Hopefully you have her quarantined away from your existing flock(s).

Do you run a rescue? I know it's sad and it can tug at the heartstrings, but sometimes it's best to not bring unwell birds in.

Get a good look inside her beak for any signs of lesions or canker. Look inside her ears for any infection or pus.

For the eye, flush and clean it well with saline, remove any debris, crusty material. Get some clear photos of the eyes. Put some Terramycin eye ointment in the eye.
