Eye swollen shut, feathers falling out and possible fever

UPDATE
So the hen has lost 25-35% of her body weight.
The eye that we were treating is now open and the other eye is shut.
Her beak is sticky from snot coming out of her nostrils
I have seen her cough today

She is drinking water but not eating that i have seen.
The Tylosin won't be here for two more days and I am afraid that will be too late

Any suggestions?
Should I force feed her?
Would VetRx help? and how to administer

Does the nasal secretions smell bad? It is possible that she might have coryza if there is a bad odor. You could tube feed her, but the tubing would need to reach down to her crop. Can you contact a local vet for meds? Many feed stores sell refrigerated injectable oxytetracycline (LA 200 or other brands.) You could give that orally 0.25 ml twice a day. They also may sell Terramycin Scours tablets 250 mg. Dosage would be 50 mg twice a day. Here is a good link about tube feeding:

VetRX helps alleviate congestion like Vicks Vapo Rub but it's not a cure. It's easy to administer. Rub it on the comb and waddles and under the wing and/or on the roost so that they inhale the vapors. Some people feed orally but it's not necessary.

OK, I have Amoxcillin on hand and I am going to start treatment now instead of waiting for the Tylosin... She might be dead by the time it arrives.

I found this on BYC Veterinary formula that i have for Amoxicillin/Ampicillin is Birds(passerines & doves)150-200 mg/kg BID(2x daily) other mammals 11-22 mg/kg BID-TID(2-3x daily) and reptiles 6 mg/kg SID-BID(1-2x daily)

I'm just gonna pop a 1/4 tablet down her throat. I am going to go 125mg twice a day for a week

Unfortunately amoxicillin will not treat MG or most other respiratory diseases because mycoplasma does not have a cell wall. Dosage for most chickens is 57 mg twice a day for 7 days. But I would I would go look for the LA200 and a syringe/needle or the Terramycin Scours tablets. Either can be given orally.

Update

She was completely lethargic when I gave her 120 mg of Amoxicillin yesterday afternoon

this morning she was up and about even made a couple of poos and ate.

this morning I had more time and mixed amoxicillin with starter feed, multi vitamin, and vitamin e oil and selenium

I have included photos of the process I used.

the information and links provided have been very helpful

thank you all. I think she’ll live.

I will keep updates until, hopefully she is fully recovered.

some photos people can see what I did

*******
Yes, eggsessive she has been molting

Last night it looked as though she was going to die. I read on another thread that amoxicillin is effective for chickens with Respiratory and dosage. Link above.

Tylosan won’t be here before Tuesday . Too late and it appears Jacksonville area is a desert when it comes to available pet meds without paying a vet.

I am glad that she is doing better. You can tube feed finely ground watery chick feed or KayTee baby bird feed 3-4 times per day if she is not eating enough. Fluid volume should be 15 ml per pound every 6-8 hours. Let us know how she is doing. It sounds like you have things under control. I just wonder if she does’t have some infection in another area bothering her, if the amoxicillin is helping. It can help with early stages ofna reproductive infection, or an infection in another organ, but amoxicillin will not help with MG or coryza, or other respiratory infections. Edited for spelling.

Update
This Morning she had both of her eyes Open And they look nice and clear

She is standing tall And there is no more snot around her beak.It looks like she is eating and drinking on her own too.

once she is fully recovered, I’ll make a summary of her exact treatment and tools used. I wish we would have had them and better antibiotics on hand.
