Two of my hens who have lived together for past few years have come to blows. One is raiseing a clutch of 3 chicks and has turned aggressive only with this particular bird.
After one scuffle I seperated them off but one got into the other and I found her laying in the mud, I thought she was dead but still hanging on. All the feathers are off her head and it is black and solid now. There was a tear under one eyelid but other than that no noticable injuries.
Over the past few days both eyes have gone bad, they have crusted up, seeming to want to close over. I can see the internal eyelid blinking away. There is a constant stream of discharge from the right eye, like conjuctivities with colour of wall paper paste. The other eye seems to be scabbing over from the outside in with some same discharge but not as much. I have ben cleaning and removing as much as I can regularly but doesn't seem to be improving.
The hen is drinking lots when I show her the bowl, actually having to put her beak into it, and she is pecking at a feeder, I have sat her in front of food and water and let her know it's there. She seems to be alert, but rarely moves, altough is able to perch at night. She seems to have perked up a bit, but I can't see that she can see.
Droppings have been largely watery and slightly greenish.
Will her eyes come round, with cleaning or should I leave her alone to heal. Is there anything I can use to keep them clean?
My feeling is that if she lives ( wasn't execting her to get this far ) then she will be blind in both eyes. Is there any chance she will heal or may it be fairer to cull?
Thans in advance for any help offered.
