Two of my hens who have lived together for past few years have come to blows. One is raiseing a clutch of 3 chicks and has turned aggressive only with this particular bird.

After one scuffle I seperated them off but one got into the other and I found her laying in the mud, I thought she was dead but still hanging on. All the feathers are off her head and it is black and solid now. There was a tear under one eyelid but other than that no noticable injuries.

Over the past few days both eyes have gone bad, they have crusted up, seeming to want to close over. I can see the internal eyelid blinking away. There is a constant stream of discharge from the right eye, like conjuctivities with colour of wall paper paste. The other eye seems to be scabbing over from the outside in with some same discharge but not as much. I have ben cleaning and removing as much as I can regularly but doesn't seem to be improving.

The hen is drinking lots when I show her the bowl, actually having to put her beak into it, and she is pecking at a feeder, I have sat her in front of food and water and let her know it's there. She seems to be alert, but rarely moves, altough is able to perch at night. She seems to have perked up a bit, but I can't see that she can see.

Droppings have been largely watery and slightly greenish.

Will her eyes come round, with cleaning or should I leave her alone to heal. Is there anything I can use to keep them clean?
My feeling is that if she lives ( wasn't execting her to get this far ) then she will be blind in both eyes. Is there any chance she will heal or may it be fairer to cull?

Thans in advance for any help offered.

I'd be placing Neosporin over her eyes and wounded parts. Make certain she drinks and eats and give lots of TLC... she could get better and she could end up blind..it's a wait and see thing.

It sounds like you are doing about all you could do. Only time will tell. If you like the bird I'd give her the chance to heal.

neosporin? is that widely available or a vet job? Is that the global name as I am in uk? Thanks for quick reply.

It was the first two we got. My wife is very upset about it, try all we can to help her and hope it comes good, but not always the reality of things. Best egg layer too.

There is a terramycin ointment for the eyes. We got ours from our vet, but I think you can get it at a feed store too. Our drakes eyes were attacked by our male guinea and his eyes are fine after we used the ointment. Good luck.

thanks for the advice.

I have some eye ointment here that is called chloramphenicol 1% its an antibiotic used for treatment of bacterial conjuctivitus, would that help?

That would be perfect.

Neosporin ointment has three different antibiotics in it, and is for the skin. It might be called triple antibiotic ointment on your side of the pond.

Looked it up triple antibiotic is exactly what its called.

will use this stuff right away, glad to be doing something to help now. Thanks for all your help and speedy replys.
