Well I don't know why I write this, maybe just to vent. I worked for the PO for nearly twenty years and I wrote pages and pages for my independent business class on the PO so I know a thing or two. OK? so don't get your knickers in a twist.
First of all the PO is in trouble for wasting money. No if's and or but's. They've negotiated contracts with the unions that had no forethought. No more than other corporations.
I had typed a whole paragraph but then realized there are friends of mine who work at the PO still and they read my postings so I thought better of it.
I will say this. There are many very good people who work for the PO and they have lots to contend with. They like many of us don't have time to explain every decision and may have had problems with multiple containers being taped together. This day and age if one person complains then we try to accommodate THAT one person at the expense to everyone else.
As for the internet taking away business. I look at it this way. If the person your sending a greeting card to is not worth a 44 cent stamp and $.99 cent card they can't be that important. To me an internet card says, you weren't worth the time and effort it would take to send you a card.
As for paying on line? You can thank the banks for that. There used to be a grace period but no more. Checks clear immediately. Every year you will see people standing in line on April 15th to mail their Tax returns and they aren't the only thing we procrastinate about.
Many of us want instant gratification. Hence the Fast food industry is booming. Instant whip cream, instant Weight watchers dinners. Heck some of us would rather get out and pump our own gas rather than wait for a gas jocky. Why grow roses to smell just take a sniff as you go down the aisle. There had to be a need for self serve cash out's. Just look at people who use them. Wait in line? Not me I'm outta here!
So do the PO a favor and order those catalogs, show Gramma she is worth sending a thank you card. Besides staring at the computer screen is bad for your eyes. Here in Syracuse they closed two PO substations. Such is life.
