Fake egg advice...

Does anyone use fake eggs to help train their hens where to lay? I have read that some use golf balls. Any success with that?
Also, where can I get fake eggs?

I have used the plastic Easter Eggs a time or two if you can't find golf balls.

Mine don't seem to like the golfballs. I took them out this morning, and they all flocked over to the nest boxes. Maybe they don't like golf...

I haven't tried the plastic eggs yet, but if they still aren't using them by end of this week, I'll try those next.

I use just plain old wooden eggs. I found mine at an antique store and got them dirt cheap. Wal-Mart carries wooden eggs. And you can also get them in almost any chicken catelogs. They are usually close to the book section in the mags. They are wooden and rubber. I have found that 2 eggs in a box gets them really excited. One will be suffecient, but pesonally I use 2. lol silly chickens!

We put golf balls in the nests when our flock was about 4 months old. They seemed to like them well enough, and after they were laying regularly, we removed them.

One morning, about two weeks after I added the golf balls to the nests, I heard a huge racket in the barn. I ran out to see what was going on. It turned out that one of the Ladies had kicked a golf ball "egg" out of the nest box. The "egg" was on the hen house floor, and all of the hens were standing over it and bawking up a storm! They did not settle down until I returned the "egg" to its nest.

I got mine at hobby lobby. My chickens will be 17 weeks old on Thursday - really looking forward to my first egg!

My chooks are about 14 - 15 weeks now, and a couple of them are starting to get real "red" about the comb and wattles. . . is it time to start putting the fake eggs in the nest box? Thx.

I have a golf ball or two in each nest box. I have left them there consistently so that if anyone decides to peck at an 'egg' to become an egg eater, there's at least a 50% likelihood they'll find hard plastic...

They really seem to like to lay in the boxes with 2 balls more than the singlets.

I started with a golf ball, then added 2 fake eggs I got at the feed store. I put all 3 together, and now I have everyone (that is currently laying) laying in the boxes.
