Fake eggs and golf balls

I always leave golf balls in the boxes. It helps with new chickens and when you have to move things around a bit. They also help with tricking broody hens into starting to sit. plus golf balls are cheaper than fake eggs.

I put golf balls in my nest boxes when I first got chickens, and also when I placed them in their new accomadations. They seemed to work, and never took them out, didn't see the point in doing so. Two weeks ago, I caught a 5 1/2 foot black snake in the coop that still had an "egg" inside. Killed the snake, decided to cut the egg out, and what do I find but one of the golf balls. I'm sure that snake would have done his damage and been long gone by the time I got home if it hadn't been for the golf ball, which kept him from being able to get out the narrow opening where he had gotten in, and I think it also kept him from being able to crest the ledge leading out the hen door. That wasn't the ball's intended purpose but hey I'll take it...

I have put ping pong balls in our girls' nests...they are just starting their laying processes...so far, so good....it was funny the first day...they were talking loudly and giving those ping pong balls the stink eye! :)
