Fall chick raising

What I enjoy seeing is the excitement in someone who has beau-coop *snicker* chickens already. Me, I understand because I have never had chickens before but you are excited even for your next batch.

edited for smart spelling error.

I am always excited for the next batch its like xmas for me.. The anticipation and trying to distract myself with projects to fill the time,, its agonizing. Plus this is the first time I have gotten them thru the mail mine all came from farms close to me, so this is first time excitement for me.

We got our chicks on Sept. 1 from Murray McMurry. All arrived well and are growing so fast. Lots of fun to watch! Here is a picture that I took this morning; "First day in the coop".

My wife had the good idea to put the brooder feeder and waterer in the coop so the chicks would feel more at home.

Love it great ideas.. the inside of your coop looks amazing can you post pics of the rest of it? I am trying to get ideas we are building a larger coop next season due to "chicken math"

I was thinking of gettting a few chicks as well this fall - am worried about the tempertures as well. Live on Vancouver Island, BC..... a litle worried about the temperture? We have a heat lamp in the coop for when it gets colder.

Mortey, I live just across the water on the main coast and was told that we're definitely fine here! As long as they have their feathers we'll be good!

I have 5 day olds out with mommy right now, here in Montana it gets real cold and we are due for some real cold weather next week. It is getting down to 28 to 30 degree's now at night but so far so good. Mommy will keep the, warm, no worries here, but you will need to wait until they fully feather out before going to the unheated coop. I'm excited that mine will lay eggs next spring instead of having to wait until next fall . I will be Doug this again this next fall also, a way better way to get eggs after the snow thaws!

Well I am super excited. I just got done blocking drafts in the coop. Got a tip from another BYCer to use your feed bags opened up and staple to the inside walls of the coop.. PERFECT!!! good way to recycle those thousands of bags, I even used some dog food bags. Next spring all you do is tear them down to let in cool breezes..

Here are a few pictures of the coop, which is located inside of our shed. This is the entrance. The old door was on the back porch of the house.

This pic was taken thru the door.

This the South wall with the pop door and the vents. The right side is the same as the left. I plan on putting hinges and a catch on the fan panel.

This is the nest that we bought years ago in hopes of having chickens someday.

This is the roost with poop board. I built the poop board with an 11 degree slope, I sure hope this isn't too steep. lol

Thanks for looking, Charlie

Charlie its a wonderful coop and I am sure nice and warm. Just perfect. I love the fan I think I will include one in my design. I built my nest boxes out of an old entertainment center bottom so it sits on the ground but it has 4 nests in it and they can use the top of it too. I love your roosts I think mine would love that design. The sloop seems fine. Do you currently have chickens in there?

Yes, we have 27 RIRs and one Turken (free exotic chick with purchase). They are 4 weeks old and really fun to watch. I found an old bell (from someones wedding I think) and tied a string on it and hung it up. Now at least one bird is ringing it. I also hung the thermometer low on the wall and several chicks have a great time pecking it. I really think that watching these birds are more fun than watching TV.
