Fanciful Frigid Fall Hatch-Along

We may already have a broody hen. HUH? These are April babies! We’ll see if she persists staying on the nest or not. She’s pancake puddled in one of the nesting boxes and fluffing up when we open the box. She laid an egg this morning (she’s been laying for a couple weeks now) and has taken over the ceramic eggs. I’m sure she’s just doing it for the day and not actually broody. But my gosh, if she’s already broody… GIRL.

She is not broody, but very cranky when laying an egg. Reasonable, as we’ve recently put their coop and run against the big coop/run to begin integration with the rest of the flock. They’re older so I’m sure they’re not overly ecstatic about the bunch of younger chickens in a bigger space coming up towards theirs. Funnily enough, the cockerels seem much less cranky about it, but they will not be with us terribly long.
We got our first normal sized egg today, yay! The others have been very small from our two egg layers, so it was a really nice surprise.

Sounds like she is practicing her snapping alligator broody phase which will probably arrive sooner than you think! She sounds adorable too! Congratulations on the new layers!

Hahaha she’s so growly! She pecked me when I reached in but then after I closed it back up, she ended up doing her egg song and finally leaving the nest. She’s a Barred Rock, possibly a mix. She looks pure barred rock but the eggs are decently olive tinted. I need to take a pic next time! They’re warming up though. Bribery and forgiveness are easy when mealworms are thrown in the mix.

I love growly broodies, although being bitten isn't too fun. But a broodies screams are adorable.
