Fancy Guppie Breeding!

OMGOSH!!!!!! I'm so glad that I fed first thing this morning, to notice this! I started to feed the males before even turning on the mother/baby tank light, but I glanced over to see that it looked really dark. The WATER. I grabbed the light and turned it on and OH! MY! GOSH! I screamed for my mom to come quick. I had made a little water bottle filter with some tropical fish safe carbon in it. It made the water black! I rinsed it REALLY well too. (Before i used it) Oh well. Well, my first thought was "Can the fish breathe?" 12 of 16 fish are in there! OMG! I grabbed a brighter light and looked, the 8 babies? Ok. Mamie and Mini? Ok. Lola? Ok. Blu Sydney and Kimmie? Ok. Mel? Mel? Mel?!?!? I COULD NOT see him. I took all of the fish out in baby nets and put them into the dad tank. I was still searching for Mel that whole time. No Mel. Finally I remembered what I am teaching them. I tapped on the side/top like I do before I feed. MEL!!!!!!! He came looking for food and I scooped him up in the net as fast as I could. He scared me to death! He and Mini are the first ones I had that were born in my tank.

Here's the damage. We did a HUGE water change. took it down to about 1'' above the gravel.

This was their temporary staying place.

After!!!

So sad, Two of the 8 babies that are three weeks old, have "Pin tail". @Chairity, what can I do for them besides cull them? They are swimming well. They don't seem hurt but it is shaped in a triangle with the tip towards the back. BTW, NEW BABIES! Congrats Lola, she is a proud momma of 16!

Sorry i havent been on in a while!

my 80 gallon guppy tank had a sudden die off- all guppies died overnight except about 8 newborn fry i found and moved into a 10 gallon. really bummed out as i had a blue moscow-hopeing these fry will be blue moscows as well. ive been disassembling the huge tank to bleach iit and everything inside of it.

as far as your pin tailed fry-if you dont want to cull them i would simply move them to a small container or mason jar, put some clean water and a bubbler in it (no filter needed) move all the pin tailed babies into it and watch to see if any recover. Clean the health frys tank as well.

and, the yellow male you got from the pet store is known as a "tequila sunrise" (more then likly the pet store simply called them sunrise guppies lol but the true name is tequila)

Bo was a half black red
and the other male looks to be an endler/guppy hybrid, those colorful patches come from endlers live barers, mateing of a male endler to a female guppy will produce those colorful body patches of orange, red, green or blue.

Wow, sorry for your loss of your fish! That sucks. Congrats on the babies though! I put the fry with pin tail in a critter keeper thing and they seem okay, we also got some Melifix to see if that helps any. The Tequila Sunrise guppy died last night. :( Idk why but he had like ripped skin on his nose. Oh well, poor baby... Wow, Freddie is quite a mix then! Thanks!

oh well, it sucks but it happens.

the thing about the Guppies from petsmart is- they are that large for a reason, they are old, it takes about a year-2 years for males to get as big as they are when sold, BIG guppies is what alot of breeders strive for, so most breeders want to BUY bigger guppies, so petsmart trys to trick people into thinking the guppies are naturally 'big" when really they are just very old and about ready to pass on anyways.

if you want more tequila babies, i would suggest take 2 of your female fry (that you have kept seperated from al males since 1-2 weeks of age) and once htey hit 4 months old and are a decent size, seperate them and THEN buy a tequila sunrise male to put in the them, more then likely those females will be impregnanted by him within the first few hours as most males go crazy mating with new females. if he dies a day or two later-no biggy because youll have 2 females ready to drop his off-spring identical to him.

That is a great idea!!! I will do that! Thanks!

Okay, firstly, HAPPY ONE WEEK OLD to the 16 babies! and WELCOME TO THE WORLD Mamie's new 8 babies that were born yesterday!!!
Update: 6 with "pin tail" have been getting Melifix treatments, and they are getting better!

We got 20 ghost shrimp! They are kicking butt in cleaning! They are fraidy cats though!

They put their little arms up like "Don't shoot!!! Don't shoot!!!" if I have my hand in the tank! It's sooooo funny!

I made the decision to move the 16 babies into a mason jar. That way they can be protected from pin tail from any others. The 8 babies are thriving in the tank.

Today when I checked on the 4 week olds, I discovered that they are all boys!!! YAY! I'm very happy about that! I want to end up with more boys than girls, so I am thrilled! Here are their names!

Ian
Karl
Leon
Marvin
Oliver
Pablo
Stewy
Willie
