FANS in yer coops/runs?? Whos got em...........

With today's 120 degree heat index, I'm concerned about heat stress, so I used the profits from selling eggs to by an oscillating fan at Wal-mart....they seem to really appreciate it

I recently built a new coop and run onto my shed. My shed has a window a/c unit. So I added a exhaust fan in the window between the shed and coop thus air conditioning my coop! I also added a barn style fan under the roof in the run as well. My girls are SUPER happy!

Egg production increased as well! The Texas heat has been unbearable both for my family and my babies!

Here's my coop/run:

I have round holes in the bottom of the coop, 2 inch opening around the top, and two nice size windows which gives good circulation. In the run I have a water mister, which they were afraid of at first now they love it. Also I put a block of ice into their water everyday which last during the hottest part of the day, one fan. The coop is in a spot that doesn't get sun all day. It's real hot here, but the humidly is not as high as it is in other parts. August is really the worst month of the whole year, then easy winter.

I have vents along the bottom west side of the coop, sliding large windows on the South and East. My thermostatically controlled vent fan is on the noth side. The fan is rated for a 1500 square foot house, so when the chicken sit in the coop, their little tail feathers blow. Personally, I would put one of the swamp coolers in, but I don't think my DH would go for it. I thought I had a "coupe de luxe" until I saw the shed with coop addition a couple of posts back. Now that is a chicken palace!

I have 8 week old pullets in the brooder. For them, I place small frozen water bottles along the inside of the brooder. They aren't integrated yet, so they cannot dust bathe to cool off. In this extreme heat, it is still hitting >100 degrees in the coop. The lay along the water bottles and seem to be much less stressed. We are going to start integrating this weekend. Let's face it, it's too hot for the big girls to chase them around......the heat might make it easier...LOL

These are the fans we added this week due to the heat wave in addition to the installed ventilators that were already moving 20,000 cubic feet per minute of air through the barn. We have a couple thousand birds here though...

I use a fan for my three guinea chicks, and use two personal misters out under our trees where the hens gather in the heat of the day. All of the girls love it, as it cools down the immediate area quite a bit. Two of my older hens lost their feathers on their backs some time ago, and they really love that mist hitting those bare areas! I run water around the area, too, for the girls to scratch around and lay in. We have had temps over 100 for nearly 30 days in a row now, and more to come in the forseeable future, but have been fortunate enough not to have lost any chickens!

Our brood has a fan inside, and access to the great outdoors, including shade and water. It tends to get hot in N. California occasionally...sometimes for DAYS... The girls will usually stop laying for a day or two in the worst heat, and resume when temps drop back to 100°F. They take a lot of shady dust baths!
