Ask outright. With hints, they can always be misinterpreted.
Besides, direct statements are kind of like hints... just bathroom-scale-over-the-head hints.

Well no I meant I was torn between outright being like 'for a birthday present I"d like permission and financial help with getting baby chicks. I don't need anything else' and dropping hints about stuff I'd like, like the sketchbook

They're for the family to eat. I got the Mushroom growing kit for my dad as a Christmas gift.

It was actually easy to set up. Cut plastic, cut some of the substrate, scrape the top, & add water. They have to be misted every day.
