Hmmm. I could try. I've only tried pushing it open. My chickens free range every day and the LGD keeps most predators under control so I haven't been super worried about it.

(If you were wondering why the water is so gross, it’s because this trough isn’t used and it mainly catches rainwater and gross stuff)

I don't see why it wouldn't be safe for the hens, if your defrosting frozen hinges.
