but I do lose hens on nests to coyotes or whatever so I want to do breeding pens this year. & because I want my black shouldered Male to father all the babens

I do tend to lock up moms with babies if I can manage it
How often do they want to sit? Is it just like as if a chicken went broody?

that I don't know. 100% free range means you have no idea where they're laying xD. they either turn up with babies, turn up dead or are never seen again.
Hmm... how many did you start with, and how many do you currently have? (roughly, I know you probably don't have exact amounts.) Have they reproduced and grown in numbers a significant amount?

2 of my hens this year didnt sit nests. one nest was laid and not sat which I assume was by one of those 2 hens that didnt sit. one of them has a neurological problem so I'm not 100% sure if she's normal in regards to breeding or not.

2 of the hens on nests showed up dead & the last one was never seen again. :(

hence breeding pens this time
