your trick with the calculator works if they've already had their birthday this year. if they havent, then you have to subtract one. but it's a good estimate regardless.
 
No. If a child is 5 and a half years old, that’s 5 years and 6 months. However, we round that down to 5 years, and so your bird would be considered 2 years until her 3rd birthday
Okay, weird.

I'm still sticking with it's been 3 years. It takes a whole year for the earth to circle the sun, so this system with months thing is just adding on confusion.
 
I am going to sell 4 of my young peacocks

ah, yes so you are thinking of years starting from new years

but she was born in july so she missed out on 7 months of that year, so she'll have to go 7 months past new years to get to her birthday and gain a year into her age.

if someone was born on new years day, you'd be right, though.
