Fun!!
Make sure to get:
Tank- 5 gallon minimum
Heater
Lid
Filter
Substrate- I prefer sand or something soft, but gravel is fine. Don't get glass beads, or anything painted.
Decorations- live plants are best, but fake plants should be silk because plastic can cut their fins. Get at least one hidey decoration that has soft edges and is big enough that they can't get stuck
Beneficial bacteria- these help you jump start the cycle in your tank (Google 'how to cycle fishtank)
Optional- Light. This is recommended if you don't have the tank near a light source (window or lamp) and pretty much required for live plants.
Optional- Floating betta log. Not required by any means, but the internet says that the love them.
Optional- Betta leaf hammock- ditto to above.

No, they didn't. I never questioned it. They don't really like us leaving the neighborhood.
