Birdrain, do pea hens leave their eggs alone for very long? I would guess they aren't like broody chickens.

My hen only gets off her nest once a day, for 5-10 min. My hen would get up eat some grass, alfalfa, crumbles, and get a drink and go back to sitting. In my opinion peahens are better brooders than chickens. Chickens were bred to lay and lay not lay a clutch, brood, and be done for the year. Now some chickens break what most chickens are bred for. Some are able to go back to instinct though you have to find the individual hen or breed. While as peahens it's their instinct to sit, they've never been breed for eggs. Again, sometimes you will get a peahen that will not sit on her nest and just keep laying eggs in it. There are always exceptions with just about anything.

It also depends on what situation you look at too. If you look at which would be the better mother; protecting their clutch or peachicks, dedicated, and a better protector the peahen wins. Peahens are very dedicated to their peachicks and nest. They will put themselves in harms way to protect their peachicks and eggs. Also peahens are more effective. Peahens have few tactics of defense for themselves and family. The fan, they fan their tail feathers up making them look twice as big and wide, powerful wings for quick take off and for defense. Peahens can get in the air really fast; being able to jump high fast and with such powerful wings they can get high up fast. Their wings are thick, hard to penetrate, those who have hunted turkeys know if you are at a distance and you have a shotgun you wouldn't try to aim at the wing since the beads might bounce off or barely penetrate the skin. If you think a chicken wing to the face hurts, peafowl wings are made to get higher up, faster, and can go through many things, these wings will leave bruises when they hit you. I got a wing to the face and part of my face was swollen. Beak and talons. Their beaks are sharp and will have no problem going through flesh and ripping. Same with the claws, very sharp, lots of power in the feet to dig them in deep, slice your skin or any animal's hide with ease. Speed. Peafowl are fast, you can not outrun a peafowl at top speed. One moment they can be a few yards next second they are up in your face. I've seen my chickens pick fights with my peahen. She will first warn them with fanning the tail feathers next second tail feathers go down, chicken is rolling and she's walking by with a distance of 15 feet. In short distance you won't see them hit you until they are on you. People have had stitches from an angry mother who didn't want her chicks to be touched.

If you're looking at who's the nicest and won't hurt me nearly as much you would want to deal with a brooding chicken. Now my peahen has not attacked me yet, knock on wood. But, I've seen other people get attacked by brooding hens or hens with peachicks. They move fast and with power, don't screw with them, take their warning. Zoos have had peahens attack people because people want to hold the chicks and then mama comes and scratches the people without mercy. Peahens are like bears don't screw with their babies. Chickens they can't get near your face when your standing, they might bite or spur your feet or legs. Peahen can get to your face since she can fly.

In my opinion peahens are the better mom compared to a chicken.

Thank you very much Birdrain - in other words, I wouldn't want a Peacock for a house pet. One more question does the male guard the nest when mama is elsewhere?

Males will not. A male might protect the hen while she's on the nest but not the nest. I've seen people have them as house pets but I would say they would not. They are powerful birds and can be destructive when pushed to do so.
