I agree. Also cows that are more tame and docile tend to conceive better when using AI.

Well the fair has come and gone and I placed last in my class but that is OK. They thought my heifer could have had a bigger butt. But I had fun and know what to look for in my next cow. Look how tolerant she is of me. At least she is nice. I will have more pics soon. My friend didn't get to bring his heifer to the fair this year because about 2 weeks ago her udders started filling up with milk and we all know what that means. She was accidently bred when she was a young calf.

That's good that you at least had fun. How old will the heifer be that is bred? The one problem with judges it's entirely based on opinion. There are a few things in common that you will always look for but then there are some major differences. For example, judges know that a wider hips mean less chance of getting dystocia. Then when it comes to calving everyone has a different opinion. Some people love a high BW on the EPDs. While others such as myself love the low BW on EPDs. My cow's EPDs I love though there are areas for improvement but her EPDs are amazing in my opinion.

My cow's EPDs: CED: 11, BW: -0.5, WW: 66, YW: 98, MK: 35.

If anyone needs help on reading EPDs I would be happy to teach them.

She looks to have a mighty big butt to me - the only bigger ones I've seen have been on Walmart customers. Would she still be able to grow a bigger one in the future to please a judge? Maybe implants like the Hollywood starlets get. Good grief. Sorry I don't mean to kid around. I showed dogs for many years and actually, it often came down to whomever the judge owed the biggest favor I had a professional handler and sometimes when he won - it was ridiculous. Pay back for judge dumping his best dog, and putting up the worse because other favors came first.

That's the problem with judges is it's all opinion. I don't think the size of the round matters in heifers. Unless you plan to butcher the heifer but when it comes to calving the important part is the hips so there's less chance of dystocia. Steers I can see were the size of the round matters but not in breeding heifers.

Good job on your heifer! Your show arena is inside and enclosed. Our show arena was just a roof over us. Though our show arena seems to be a lot bigger than your arena.
