Faverolles Bred back to Dorking project

Hi, I found this thread because I was just preparing my chicken for dinner and I noticed the really dark meat, I wanted to make sure it was ok, I have never seen this before, this one was a bantam faverolle cross with dorking

, when the chicks started to develop we laughed because they looked like our mrs dorking but they had smaller heads with whiskers and beards, anyway the chicken tasted beautiful.

this is the white roo from my project, he was the result of a White R/C dorking roo over a salmon fav hen. He will be heading to Rhode Island this weekend to hopefully help in rebuilding the white Faverolles LF variety

here he is with his 1/2 sister, she is the result of a Salon Fav roo over white R/C Dorking hens

Some great information and food for thought, so to speak. We are currently working to build our own flock for dual purpose. I happen to be kinda old fashioned about a lot of things and am more interested in having our own self sustaining flock than just buying meat chicks once a year or so... not that it is a bad option at times! I have been researching the Dorkings because I liked what I'd been reading about their meaty qualities and their broody traits (another real plus for me, I LOVE a broody hen) And am starting to dig deeper into finding a good source of a few Dorking chicks or eggs for us to add to the flock. I admit I will be 'stealing' some of your hard work/info to give me a head start on looking for ourselves! Thank you and I am looking forward to seeing how your project evolves!

Try Yellow House Farm for your stock, they are where I got the Dorkings for my first cross, and Joseph has done a great job of creating a true utility line of meat birds, while still preserving the Dorkings heritage traits. His line are extremely hardy as well, living in open sided buildings in New Hampshire year round. He also is a very nice person who loves helping others in the Dorking breed, and he is VERY knowledgeable and passionate about his breed.

Thank you! I will check it out!

OK it has been quite a while but the F2s are on the ground and I have a sneak peek for everyone courtesy of a friend also helping w/ the project way up in Alaska. This fine young cockerel was produced from my F1 girls covered by a pure Fav roo... long way to go, but it appears the male pattern genes are there, he also is a nice stocky little guy

OK, curiosity begs more info. How's it going? How's your friend's white project?
