Faverolles Thread

Hi!

I recently read that Salmon Faverolles are great in temperment EXCEPT in mixed flock. I was told that SFAVS can be aggressive toward other breeds and I am a little concerned that my Silver Grey Dorkings may not do well if this is so. They are growing up together if that helps they are about 5 days old.

Nope they are meek and mild as milk. Your Dorkings will be the top dogs in their pen

Hey Zach, I am in Alabama and I have bantam black Faverolles. I have turned the blacks and blues together now to work on another project and needed a empty pen. It's to hot to ship birds or eggs from here now with temps around 99 and 100, and heat indexs around 110. Get with me in the fall when its cooler and I can get you eggs or maybe a started pair or trio. Are you going to Lucasville for the Eastern Nationals?

Thanks, sandiklaws and showrabbit10! I was wondering about this info as it seemed a little off. Right now I have a tiny Salmon Faverolle chick that runs around and eats the food dust off of the other chicks' faces; super funny!

Quote: I will say this, I am new to Favs and I got mine from Jeanine. She has her first Fav that she got from a hatchery a long time ago. She keeps him because he is a sweet boy, but small. I saw him compared to the boy she is using for her breeding program. The young one was HUGE!! I have a 18 week old cockerel that is at least twice the size as a few of my larger, full grown hens. I think I may need to eventually make myu coop door bigger! Lol! She breeds for size and type, and there is a BIG difference.

I will also say that those two boys were looking at each other through the fence and really didn't even react much. No fighting attitudes, just checking each other out with a keen eye.

I am so happy with these birds! I am planning on replacing all of my layers, as I lose some(due to natural causes) with Favs.

Enjoy your Favs hatchery or not. They are probably great birds with wonderful temperments. If you want to breed, I would get some from a breeder to start.
I am not looking to be a breeder, but I want to be able to replenish my own flocks and if I have a few friends that want hatching eggs, I can hopefully give them eggs from higher quality stock. That is why I got mine from Jeanine.

Jeanine: I will take some pics today. You should see the pair now at 18 weeks! Gorgeous! I am still waiting for Romeo to crow. Yes, I named them Romeo and Juliette.

I am assuming that this breed can take longer to mature. Correct?
It's ok with me, just hoping he is doing his duty by next spring weather or not he crows!

Thanks for answering this for me Kim, I was out of town this weekend. :)

And that's exactly right. Usually the hatchery Favs are very small. My one hatchery Fav hen that runs with the hatchery Fav cock that Kim mentioned is super itty bitty as well, and mean, though she is settling down with age. She's 4 this year, and my son was just able to catch her and hold her for the first time a few weeks ago. He's attached to the hatchery pair, that's why we keep them around.

Kim - yes, they take quite a while to mature, and if there's no competition, Romeo may take more time to find his voice. (Love the names by the way!)

On a sadder note, as I said, I was out of town this weekend...I had someone come water everyone yesterday, but the heat we had was too much for a few, and I came home to three dead birds. It stinks. I knew it would happen when I heard how hot it had gotten, but I know that if I had been here I could've done things for them, might not have saved all of them, but maybe....

Naturally, it was one of my Merlin boys, my blue bantam cock bird that I was planning on putting over my 5 super nice pullets after fall shows, and one of my nice black bantam hens....Figures.

I will send you eggs as soon as I can from mine... got them thinned down to a trio and a pair, only 2 lines now (Summer and Marcel) as I lost the Arthur hen in the heat. Going to be setting everything they lay and only keeping the most vigorous ones the second I get some eggs from them.... but when there are enough growing out you will be one of the first to get some.
