Faverolles Thread

I will say this, I am new to Favs and I got mine from Jeanine. She has her first Fav that she got from a hatchery a long time ago. She keeps him because he is a sweet boy, but small. I saw him compared to the boy she is using for her breeding program. The young one was HUGE!! I have a 18 week old cockerel that is at least twice the size as a few of my larger, full grown hens. I think I may need to eventually make my coop door bigger! Lol! She breeds for size and type, and there is a BIG difference.

Enjoy your Favs hatchery or not. They are probably great birds with wonderful temperments. If you want to breed, I would get some from a breeder to start.

Interesting that the Hatchery birds are so much different in size. I have (ignorantly) assumed that hatchery birds would be pretty standard for whatever breed you choose, just not perfect show quality. Obviously my 2 blue-red Cubalayas aren't both blue-red. One is white with brown "splashes" on her back. Very pretty but clearly NOT blue-red. They are the friendliest of my 6 breeds (and smaller than the EEs by half). I haven't gotten around to taking pictures lately but I think this is when she was about 4 weeks old.

Guess I'll have to wait until Anais and Clemance (my daughter named them after 2 girls she stayed with in France) are full grown and see how close they come to the 'standard' 6.5 pound Faverolle hen

Is it fair to ASSUME that a smaller than 'standard' Faverolle will also lay smaller eggs, my sole use for the chickens?

As for temperament, the Favs are not the first to come running but they have figured out I am worth putting up with when I bring earwigs

When some of the birds FINALLY decided they wanted to go outside, the Cubalayas then Favs were the first to make the trip. And along with the Anconas, too STUPID to come in when it was pouring rain (the first they have ever been in). And no, they did NOT look real happy out there. The EE that most likes to be outside, popped right up the ramp when the rain got serious. I had to chase down and pick up the rest - when the rain stopped for a short time 'cause *I* am not a stupid chicken.

Faverolles eggs are only medium-large to begin with. The eggs from your girls will not necessarily be smaller - small chickens do not automatically mean small eggs.

As for your blue-red Cubalayas, blue x blue will give you blue, black and splash offspring. Your white with brown splotches is a splash red.

I was able to get a couple eggs from chickened to hatch out...I think he got his from you Cloverleaf? I was surprised at the size of the eggs...they seem huge. I'm so dang excited...I sure hope they hatch.
Thank you for putting me in touch with him, he was a gem to talk to.

Awesome! Yeah, he's really great, and yes all of his Favs came from me, in fact I have one of the boys that he hatched out back here in my breeding pen for a while. :) Yep, most of my eggs are quite large. They average 58-63 grams. Hope you get a good hatch!

Thanks! Nice to know how we should describe little Fae. Maybe Ideal should sell them as Blue OR Red rather than Blue Red

The other looks to be a 'true' blue-red. They are both pretty and friendly, the only thing left is for them to get old enough to lay eggs

OK, back to your regularly scheduled Faverolle thread, sorry for the slight hijack.

I'm so excited about these eggs! I didn't even get them for me. I'm decision challenged right now on picking two breeds to stick with. Worse..he is right down the road from me and I pass his egg refrigerator twice every day!!! I fear I may start fantasizing about becoming an egg burglar.
