Faverolles Thread

You'd get sex-linked chicks from the fav and buff brahmas. Columbian (incomplete patterned) for the pullets, buff columbian for the roos. All columbian, probably some with red shoulders, for fav and light brahma cross. Probably silver wheaten with the dark brahma cross.

Pea comb is dominant. I have no idea with the yellow vs white on the legs.

Rock N' Faverolles :

I just wanted to share that I have been doing research on Faverolles and discovered there used to be blues, blacks, and ermines in this country in the early 1900's. It's a shame they didn't catch on then.

Don't forget cuckoo. Anyone up for a cross with cuckoo marans?

Someone's already done the work on those...are they here though, or just overseas??

As far as I know just overseas.

I do know last year there was someone working on standard blues, but they weren't ready yet.

I have 4 little wigglers growing! We were joking around at work thinking up names for them, recycle, compost, and of course, Lucky! Need one more name.........

I had a few cuckoo faverolles from a cross I did several years back. Had to get rid of them though. I plan on trying to recreate the cuckoo color but it's not as simple as just crossing a cuckoo marans on a faverolles. It will still take several generations.

I spent way too much time the other day with the chicken calculator (and am not finished with it yet, LOL! It's rather addictive!), and I *think* that if I start with Speckled Sussex, Buff Orpingtons, and the Salmon Faverolles, within a few generations I should have some Mille Fleurs. Then the question will be getting them to meet standards for Faverolles. I thought about the Buff Brahmas, but they have the pea comb and yellow legs, which might be hard to breed out. For just making a good dual-purpose Mille Fleur breed, though, they'd be great.

I've always drooled over the little Mille Fleurs in the Murray McMurray catalog, but didn't want the bantams. Never realized that it would be possible to make it myself! Thanks to Henk for that chicken calculator!!!

Oh, I know it takes several years to get anywhere close to where you want to go. Look at bigmedicine's brahma project. He's been working on it for 20 years. I'm just thinking of starting points.

Besides, it's fun to think of all the possibilities. The genetics of chicken colors is fascinating.

My biggest concern is getting back to good Faverolles type after doing some crossing like that. I wonder who the closest Fav breeder is to my location? I may have to have someone with more experience come look at my flock in a few years and help me do some selecting.

ETA: I've been looking at incubators, LOL! Can't afford anything too expensive, but have heard that it's hard to disinfect the styrofoam ones. Anyone have any experience with them?
