Faverolles Thread

Just like Pringles -- you can't have just one, LOL!

I like having a mixed flock -- it's fun having all the different colors running around in the yard (although I've got to pen mine back up, because there are LARGE raccoon tracks in the frost on the back porch this morning!). But if I can get a good line of Salmon Favs going and some Mille Fleurs, that will be plenty of color in the yard!

Kathleen

ETA: I need recommendations on where to get good Buff Orpingtons and Speckled Sussex for my project. Does anyone here raise them? Is there any decent hatchery stock? (I'd just as soon get chicks, really -- hatching eggs seem to be a bit of a crapshoot, although I know I'll have to get some for my Salmon Favs.)

Thats true I have always loved having several diffrent breeds. I plan on having Mottled Javas, Several colors of Faverolles, Ameraucana, and Wellsummers those are my favorite breeds. I have ownded all of them except for the Javas.

Rock N' Faverolles :

I just wanted to share that I have been doing research on Faverolles and discovered there used to be blues, blacks, and ermines in this country in the early 1900's. It's a shame they didn't catch on then.

David

There are still Bantam Blues and Blacks they were made by crossing with Orpingtons There are also buffs. Leisha Comer said there are several breeders who have them but she is the only one who really is getting good results with consistent Faverolles type and less throwbacks to the Orpingtons.

Contact Hinkjc she has some really amazing Buff Orps, White Orps, Black Orps, Lavender and Jubilee (millie Fluer) Project Orps. They may also have speckled sussex but I am not sure if nto Bargain has speckled sussex I think.

Yes, that is true about the bantams. The birds in the early 1900's were not created by crosses here, but imported from England.

WOW thats a real shame that people let them disapear. I did see some really nice blue splash Faverolles LF for sale on Eggbid once they were beautiful but for pickup only in Texas.

Ooooh! If Hinkjc has Mille Fleur Orps, I might not need the Speckled Sussex! I'll PM her -- thanks!

Thats what I was thinking Orps have the fluff and size you need for Faverolles to.

I PM'd Hinkjc, will see what she says. If she has any of her Sussex X Orp chicks for sale, that would save me one generation of crossing.

I looked at her website -- I like her pen set-up.

Kathleen

ETA: Does anyone raise Mahogany Faverolles? I'm thinking that color might work better -- take less generations -- to get good Mille Fleur color than the Salmons. And if I put Mahogany in the chicken calc, what do I call it?!?
