Faverolles Thread

All this talk of faverolles projects makes me hopeful that there will be some really awsome birds when I get out of college. I can't wait to see.

Are you going for four years? (Economy permitting, I suppose.) We could make that our goal, to have something awesome to show Henry when he graduates from college!

Yep 4 years

Anyone have photos of proper toe spacing/placement? I have seen the 5th toe jutting out in every which direction, how can I find what the breed standard calls for?

Don't worry. Mine will take several years, probably far more than 4.

Today I got a good picture of Salmon V.S Blue salmon Neck feathering. Some people I have talked to need clarification about the blue salmon color. Blue salmon is just the salmon coloring with blue replacing black. It breeds like any blue, black, and splash bird except with blue salmon, salmon, and splash salmon. I really love my blue salmons they are my favorites besides goober who is the sweetest little salmon hen who loves to be held. The blue salmons are beautiful!

I just wanted to share that I have been doing research on Faverolles and discovered there used to be blues, blacks, and ermines in this country in the early 1900's. It's a shame they didn't catch on then.

I have Buff Brahma, Light Brahma and Dark Brahma hens in with my Salmon Faverolles roo. I think I am going to hatch a few of their eggs to see what the results are. I think I remember reading that the Brahma was used in creating the Faverolles . . . I 'll have to go look that up again. Any thoughts on this cross?

They have a pea comb, which will be dominant. Do they have yellow legs?

Hatch some and see what you get. They'll get big anyway!

Thanks for the pea com info - I'm still very uneducated in the genetics department. And yes, Brahmas have yellow legs. A pea comb would certainly be a plus in winter. Brahmas also lay larger eggs than Favs and are good winter layers like the Favs so I'm thinking thats a good combo too. And yes, they should certainly be good sized, heavy birds too. I'm really curious what colors I'd get with this cross - as in maybe it could be used in creating a new color variety in Favs ? Is yellow skin dominant?

I have two EE/Fav cross chicks in the brooder right now. One has 5 toes and one 4. One has white legs, one yellow. I know the 5 toes is an incomplete dominant but don't know about skin color dominance. (What happened to the green EE legs?) What about beards and muff? Right now, neither of these two look like they are going to have either! I would think with a Fav/EE cross they would HAVE to have beards/muffs. Oh, well, guess I'll find out in a few weeks. Anyway, I have a Cochin that I think is trying to go broody. If she stays serious about it I might just have to let her hatch out some Brahma/Fav babies. If nothing else they should be a good addition to the layer flock.
