Faverolles Thread

Snozzle, that was not intended toward you. Remember LF really start growing in their 2nd year of life. As for combs, I keep roos that have 4 or more points, any less get sold at backyard auctions.

I agree with Elias and you will find that this is the consensus from much more experienced faverolles breeders then anyone on this thread. Both Dick and Peter have said combs are one of the last things to cull for. Your population of birds has to be able to support your culling methods is what Peter says. So if most of your birds have 7 or 8 points and only 1 or 2 have 4 or 5 you will have to use birds with incorrect numbers of points and get the type right first. That is just my two cents. Nothing new as I feel I am for sure not experienced enough to give advice. Just passing along things Peter and Dick have said to me and posted on this thread in the past.

I'm not as picky about combs as I am about feet. I knew starting out on this mahogany project that I was really going to have to be brutal about the toes as Emmet has just awful feet. He does have 5 toes on each but the 4th and 5th ones are basically stubs. Plus, I don't have a huge amount of space so, compared to many breeders, I can't hatch a whole lot of chicks. So, if I keep pullets with lousy toes, and them breed them back to Emmet, I will probably get chicks with lousy toes. And until this year, I had no other rooster to use. At least I was fortunate in starting out with some hens that had really good 4th and 5th toe spacing to balance out Emmet's. This years chicks have been much better in that department. Now I just have to make myself let the birds mature more before culling as I have gotten rid of a couple that in retrospect, as I learn more from other breeders, I should have kept to see how they developed. I have been told this from the beginning by several breeders and am really beginning to see the wisdom of this after seeing how much my birds change in just a few months.

. . . . lol!

Thank you both for your good advice. I am still going to scrap those 3 from the breeding pen, they really have nothing going for them even without looking at the combs and feet, just tall and lanky looking.
I still have 3 peeps in the brooder that I am hopeful for, then I have my little Monika who I like a lot and who looks very nice and then I have my big near adult Boba Fett, who is the sweetest boy ever, he has a nice shape, nice colors, very heavy and wide and as an unexperienced person I would say he fits the standard quite well and in his case I did make an exception on the comb, it's not great. He did lose a few tail feathers, so his tail is still in the progress of growing back.

HI, just curious how old these girls are...is the one you like related to the 3 others you are not as pleased with???? know anything about what the parents looked like??? Thanks, eliz

I knew Dick created them. I just think he sold the flock when he cut back some time ago and then somehow ended up getting some more mahoganies. I think he hatched them from someone. Not sure though I am sure they are gone now as he is cutting back this spring. I agree about the color though. I mis spoke when I said firery red I just meant that is the color I have seen on them. I agree if they are going to be called Mahogany Faverolles they should be a deep rich red. More like the red you find in dark males wingbows. That cherry/ mahogany/ dark red whatever you want to call it. Not orange.
HI, This is really nice to get this discussion going..........of the birds that i have seen, there seems to be the Reddish cast males and the orange cast males,,,,,,the females; lighter brown, some with darker necks, some without with creamier front and beard and those that are darker with a matching beard and front.....all seem appealing....

SandiKlaws males has the chestnut beard, mine has a black beard... If we are re-starting the definition of Mahogany there is nothing that says we cant continue a second incarnation, with standardized markings, finding a niche for it also. Sort of like the Salmon, Blue Salmon.....???? My 2 girls are one of each, both from Sandhill 1 year apart...

I am hoping we can get enough projects going to breed the better conformation that the Faverolle is known for, and distancing ourselves from the inbreeding/linebreeding bottleneck. But considering the color question.....in males do we like black or brown male beards, orange cast or red cast, solid coloration or multi,,,,,,,,,females, solid coloration or darker color with lighter breasts, cream beards or darker beards....does it matter???? maybe or not.......

They aren't related, I have 4 different bloodlines for more diversity and more to choose from. Monika is 5 weeks old, the poor looking ones are 4 weeks old, the youngest are 2 weeks and my Bobi hatched this spring, I am at work so I can't look up when exactly it's on my home PC. I have seen parent stock of the 2 week olds and my 5 week old girl and they were pretty nice.

They wouldn't last long. Cats and chickens are the two nosiest creatures on earth so would probably kill themselves off with their curiosity very shortly!
I guess they would have 4.5 lives since they are only half cat, but imagine cats with wings, though coops with litterboxes would be nice

No problem, I wasn't sure if it was or not, I just didn't want to annoy anyone by asking questions.

Do they fill out more in stockiness or do they just develop and define more in type in the second year?
