Faverolles Thread

I don't know what happened to Buck Creek. Dick was supposed to get eggs from her, then she disappeared. He never got them.
Dick did say he had some mahoganies running around a while back. I am sure he has gotten rid of them but I wonder who they were from.

Elias,

Your boys will probably end up looking something like the boy below as I can get this "red salmon" look consistently in the males:

These guys have really dark red and often have a lot of red in their beards and this boy is even developing some red in his wing triangle. They also tend to have much richer yellow coloring in hackle and saddle feather with a lot of reddish tint. While they do have a LOT more red than most Salmons, Leisha and Keesmom are right - they are not mahoganies. I don't even consider my girls to be mahogany yet as I think the color needs to get MUCH darker.

I have hatched a couple like this:

But this guy's toes and comb were awful so I talked myself out of keeping him for breeding. In hindsight, I probably should have kept him - sometimes I am too picky. Hopefully, now that I am getting more consistently correct combs and toes, I will get a better version of this in my next few hatches.

Henry, thanks for finding that picture. I knew it was in this thread somewhere but couldn't locate it. I tried to contact Buck Creek last year but never got a reply. Maybe I'll try again as they are definitely on the right track.
I agree about the hens needing to be much darker to be considered mahoganies. But at least there is progress in that direction. Hope you do get a better version of the mahogany male. Are these coming out of the red salmons? No problem about the pictures.

Emmet, my Meyer Hatchery rooster, is responsible for all the "red salmons" that I have. That's why I'm hoping to find a few other people working on them as mine are going to get rather inbred before too long. I need to go find those details on how to keep breeding from within a closed flock.

Nice I like the color on the males very cool. Glad you will be keeping them and working with them Sandi.
Thanks! I have been considering passing them along for some time, in fact had them sold, but the buyer has only sent me $20- and that was 2 months ago... going to return his money if he ever contacts me. He is active daily on another forum I frequent, and we last messaged 3 weeks ago when he was trying to sell a bunch of stuff to pay for my guys... but he is a high school kid who is passionate about chickens and bit off more then he could chew money wise when feed shot up... he has 5 times what I do for birds. I will send him eggs free of charge in the future maybe, but I have too much feed into these guys, for far too long to wait any more. I was never happy about getting rid of them as they are the birds I selected for myself. Gonna have to let him down easy though... he is a great kid and I do not want him to feel badly.

When you yhink mahogany, you think a dark rich brown. Not red. You just have to keep breeding your darkest hens. I got hin on accident. bred a buff hen to salmon roo, them bred him back to buff to get buff.

Since we are on the subject of darker faverolles, I have a month old chick that I thought was a roo at first, but I'm thinking now it is a very dark hen. Not great quality I just hope she fills out some more, she just looks so tall and lanky compared to my better quality girls. I am still new to faverolles, so I thought I would ask the veterans here if I am correct that this is a hen and what color do you think she will be as she gets older?

To me mahogeny is the color of an Irish setter, dark, shiney brownish- with a strong red cast to it. Don't know it that is the "mahogeny" chicken people are seeking.

that looks more Golden Retriever to me
