Faverolles Thread

ok what should they look like at that age??? i am new to Mahogany's so i am all ears lol... most of the salmon males i have hatched where lighter than these at this age... I'm looking threw my pic's and this is the closest i can find... they have more of a reddish breast and reddish brown on there wings than these guys do... and the chick in this pic has a solid black breast now...

Elias,

Your boys will probably end up looking something like the boy below as I can get this "red salmon" look consistently in the males:

These guys have really dark red and often have a lot of red in their beards and this boy is even developing some red in his wing triangle. They also tend to have much richer yellow coloring in hackle and saddle feather with a lot of reddish tint. While they do have a LOT more red than most Salmons, Leisha and Keesmom are right - they are not mahoganies. I don't even consider my girls to be mahogany yet as I think the color needs to get MUCH darker.

I have hatched a couple like this:

But this guy's toes and comb were awful so I talked myself out of keeping him for breeding. In hindsight, I probably should have kept him - sometimes I am too picky. Hopefully, now that I am getting more consistently correct combs and toes, I will get a better version of this in my next few hatches.

Henry, thanks for finding that picture. I knew it was in this thread somewhere but couldn't locate it. I tried to contact Buck Creek last year but never got a reply. Maybe I'll try again as they are definitely on the right track.

I don't know what happened to Buck Creek. Dick was supposed to get eggs from her, then she disappeared. He never got them.

Thank You Henry for posting those lovely pictures of Mahogany boys....I have such trouble figuring how to post pics since i don't have an easy picture reducing program. My boy also has the same coloration but his feet need major work. The girls in the picture are like my lighter girl....I am hoping my Cloverleaf girl can bring better qualities into the group i have.

Good to hear from You Leisha, remember you posted a pick of a nice Mahogany Roo awhile back also......

I have not spoken with Buckhorn in some time either but was in line for some eggs too.

Will begin breeding them again in a few months after seeing how the latest eggs develop. if decent would like to share eggs so others can help work on them.....eliz

...and I guess that nails it I will be keeping them LOL Had been on the fence a while, but that roo that Henry posted is awesome... wish the breeder could be contacted. Here are a few shots of my guys, taken around 2 months ago:

F1 Salmon Mahogany pullet...

cockerel from my Sandhill Mahoganies... He is pretty, but there is work to be done on color separation and he has lacing that is not "correct"

Fire engine red pullet that needs more leg feathering...

Camera shy dad... he has been sold as his son surpassed him in color and type

Head shot of dad...although the flash turned him into a zombie chicken LOL
