Faverolles Thread

More proof that chickens don't care a thing about whatever plans we might have for them....I just went out and found my awesome little buff cockerel dead....I was planning on using him as my main breeding male for the bantam buffs next spring....

sigh....now to decide what issue I'd rather deal with this coming breeding season...toes or beards....
Am so sorry to hear....just like coming home and finding my sweet Kable gone.....sometimes wonder if they are trying to lead you in other directions.....eliz

Well they lay in winter and are very cold hardy. Small combs and beards on hens help on maintaining that. Well beyond the breed SOP etc just my own thoughts on the justification as to the why's.
In the several years that i have had Faverolles, all muff and bearded, they have been cold hardy and lay year around.(Pacific N.Wet often cold and snowy, all my birds are in outside runs except the bantams who live in the barn)....i think it has more to do with what has been bred into them....You breed the best attributes you continue the possibility of best attributes. eliz

Ok another opinion needed this is my 4 month old LF Salmon Faverolle whatcha think? Pretty good to start with HuH?
Looking good for 4 months! Looks like he might be a little pinched just in front of the tail, but his beard is huge, and I like his nice clean hackles!

So I have a question for the experts...

I have a trio of Favs living at my Mom's. I just recently hatched a few chicks from them. They are healthy and of course adorable. A few of them seem to have a short outer toe. Not the fifth toe. Has anyone come across this? Does it mean anything?
Thinking I may have to replace the roo.

Can you post a pic??

I am glad you asked for a picture. It is amazing how different things are when you take a photo. The photo does not show it to well, but now I do not think the toe is a s short as I thought. I will be keeping an eye on them.

It's not as short as you think ;) Plus, it's still a toe, and you've got good placement / separation on the 5th toe...I'd be pretty happy with that.

I had a hen that threw chicks missing the toenail on that same outer toe. Very odd. I eventually stopped using her.
