Faverolles Thread

I like the LF because I like the big eggs! Those little eggs just don't look right in the cartons. hahahha But, yea, the bantams are cute.

Me too, Even Medium would be nice. My Ideal Poultry Favs are laying mid range USDA Small most of the time.

Help!! I have a beard assassin! At first I thought I was imagining it, but then my rooster showed up with no beard at all!!

That happened to me last fall. I think started by the Anconas but both Faverolles and Easter Eggers were "de-bearded" and I saw one of the Favs picking the feathers out of an EE. By the time I got the "no pick" there was nothing left. Now I have "naked neck" EEs and Favs. I'm HOPING they'll grow back when the girls moult. If they do, the "no pick" is going on as soon as I see feathers

Some one told me you can tell salmon favorolles roos from hens from hatch is that right? or do you have to wait until they hatch out.
thanks.
best to wait until they feather out, boys will have black feathers on their legs and shoulders... they will also look " messy" for several months until their pattern straightens out around 6 or 7 months so don't stress if they do not look right, have had some that almost looked like a tortoise-shell cat!
Are there any genetic problems, or senstitivities with salmon faverolles? I lost one a week ago. We had a few cold nights (Florida cold, so 36 F). On Tuesday, she laid an egg (about 7 months old, been laying three weeks or so) and acted normal. Wednesday morning she seemed sedated. she had a purplish comb. by the afternoon, she was walking like she was stiff, and if I picked her up and put her back down, she would take a minute to gain her balance, then Thursday morning I found her dead. She did not have mites, and I treated for worms two weeks ago. She did not have any diaherrea. She drank and ate a little durin the day.
I now have a second (her sister) pullet who just began the same symptoms, except her comb is still red. She has not began to lay yet. This time, I just gave her an Epsom flush, thinking maybe there is a toxin in their pen. Backstory: I just built their pen three weeks ago, but I have never put any poisons for rodents or anything. Food is covered and kept in a shed, its not moldy, I go through just less than 50lbs in a week. My other pens (BCM, Dutch, Cochins... Etc) all get the same layer crumbles and so far not seeing any problems in their pens.
I have found some seem weak, however I would suggest you get the dead bird a necropsy as soon as possible to help the remain birds get treated

I posted a response to your thread in the emergencies/diseases section, but I think you should consider the possibility of Marek's or Lymphoid Leukosis/lymphomatosis.

Thanks for the responses. I unfortunately can't afford the $50-$60 to pay the fee and shipping for nacropsy. After a lot of research, I am thinking Visceral Lymphomatosis, symptoms fit. Also, it is tranmittable mostly through hen to egg, and since those two pullets where sisters from hatching eggs I purchased last September, I believe that is how they where infected. The salmon Faverolle pen is on lock down now, poor birds have to miss their days of free ranging... Just to make sure no other deaths occur

Are you sure about those fees? Is there an animal health lab (usually University related) near by? I found one near me and they did the necropsy for $20. I just drove the bird over to them.....If you're not sure, look in the phone book and call your local county extension agent, they may be able to refer you....

Hey N8tive, I just saw that you have miniature cattle. Who knew cows could be cuter-- I love jersies with their long lashes. Make it a mini and I melt.

The UofA pullet is laying!!! I believe I am going to show her. I like how dark a color she is. Not sure. If they seem fertile I'll need help getting some to Dick. Probably only half a dozen at a time since its only her.

Yes, that is one of two testing faculties "locally" it is $30 for the necropsy. The facility is not local enough for me to drop off, so have to ship. The websit also said a there was a $25 cremation fee, but when I called, they didn't mention it.
I did decide that if I have any more deaths, I will get the necropsy no matter what.

Hope you won't need to, but glad to hear you will if needed. They sometimes can be inconclusive, but I know I always feel better knowing I did everything in my power to figure out what went wrong.
