Broody hens rock!!!
smile.png

I just checked, and there are at least eight chicks under my broody hen! Three or four eggs still not hatched -- I just took a very quick peek, so I'm not sure -- and some of the chicks are still wet, so have obviously JUST hatched. Will give her another day or two before I give up on those. For shipped eggs, I think it's a pretty fantastic hatch, especially as I didn't have to monitor an incubator!

Thank you, Melissa!

Super!! I'm supposed to get a new doeling soon -- waiting to hear from the breeder on what she has for doe kids this year. My old buck, that I sold last year, was from her, so I know she has good stock. I don't want to ever have any other breed again -- Obers are the best.

When I was out doing chores this morning, three of the new Fav chicks kept peeking out from under their GLW 'mom' -- they are so cute!! I am going to check on them again in a few minutes (have to get ready for church) -- I'm a little concerned, because if (when) they get out of the rabbit nest box that they hatched in, they won't be able to get back in. It froze last night, but is supposed to get up to seventy today, so hopefully, if they get out while I'm in town this morning, they won't die of cold before I get home! As soon as I'm sure all the eggs that are going to hatch have done so, I'll move the clutch of chicks out of the nest box and take it out of the cage. It was interesting -- the hen was eating bits of egg shell while I watched them this morning, cleaning up the nest.

Well it looks like it might be awhile before I get pictures on here. I am having problems downloading them onto the website and I don't have to much time to play around with it. I will get pictures on here some time though.

The boy on the right looks ok it takes a while for male favs to look really good. The girl in the middle is the only one I would keep for breeding. One looks to be beardless which is a big no no and the other one looks to dark to me. Just my opinion they are pretty and look big for 9 weeks!

Hope you can figure it out I would love to see yours birds. I am working on Lavender and Lavender Salmon Faverolles this spring and summer it will probably take 6+ years of heaving culling but I hope to have something nice to look at and correct to faverolles type at the end. I am using a lavender D'uccles male over salmon and black faverolles hens.

Here is how I explain how to upload photos. First go to the bar at the top and click upload then upload and go through your computers files and pick the photo you want to upload. Then you will be back in the upload window and you select the picture size which should be the one for message boards. Then click upload and wait. To see what you have uploaded there is a button at the bottom of the page that says view uploads then copy the IMG code and paste it on this thread.

Anyone correct me if this sounds wrong.

OK... my computer just did something weird so if this is a repost I apologise. I am not certain, but I could not tell if the beardless girl had the right number of toes, it looked like 4 to me. As for the dark girl, I would not count her out until you see what she produces. She might produce the best pigmented roos, or won't pass the dark pigment along to her chicks... she might even moult out a different color entirely. I say hang onto her and use cautious judgement when culling her hatches. There is just not enough of these guys around to be as selective as we might be with a more common breed... and to toss a pullet out that might have something of value to contribute to your flock would be a bit hasty. That being said, your beardless pullet should go if she is truely beardless/toeless but if you want to grow her out to see what she becomes I say go for it... unless she is truely toeless.

GOOD LUCK!

Thanks for the feedback Henry! I am planning to hang onto these for a little bit longer and see how they develop... it is fun watching them grow and change.
It's funny how big they look in the pictures... they are still pretty small in real life... especially next to my other Favs

The girl you are saying is beardless, does seem to have 5 toes at least on the foot I can see. I think there all pretty girls, but I agree the one in the middle seems like your best girl, I couldn't tell you about all the technical stuff just if I was to pick one out it would be her.
