My eggs from Melissa will be on day 21 Friday evening. They are under a broody hen, so I haven't candled, so I have NO CLUE what I may end up with! But she hasn't kicked any eggs out of the nest, so I'm hoping for a good hatch!!

The five chicks that I got from Cloverleaf Farm are growing well -- they are outside in a chicken tractor, still on game bird starter. One of the three cockerels has no beard at all, so he'll end up out with the Wyandotte hens in the laying flock (unless I give him to a friend who needs a rooster). The other two cockerels and the two pullets look pretty good. One of these days, when I have time, I'll get some updated pictures to post here and have you all tell me if they are good enough for the breeding flock (as much as you can tell at this age -- they are only not quite three months old now). I've still got a lot to learn about this breed, and would be glad of some help!

I'd love to see them Kathleen!! I just hatched chicks from Melissa too, and on the second try I got 8/11!! The first time around wasn't so great, but the grand ol' USPS had their hand in that one! I did end up with a blue salmon cockerel and a white pullet out of the first go-round though!

Keeping my fingers crossed for lots of babies for you!!!

I'm starting to think maybe favs just aren't in the cards for me...My first batch of babies hatched beginning of March, produced 4 roos for sure, 1 salmon girl with a really bad comb and really bad toes, and 3 whites, 2 of which I think are boys and the only (possibly) girl has very bad toes as well.

Second hatch I only got 4 out of 7 eggs, 2 boys, 2 salmon girls.

As I've read this thread, I was going to go the way of easy culls first...toes and combs, maybe I should rethink that and check type first? But then I will have to keep them a lot longer than I anticipated...what do y'all think?

candled the bantam 8 black brahma eggs and the 1 trial bantam fav egg. found that 3 of the brahmas didn't continue to develop but everyone else did! here's hoping i have a few chicks hatch in a couple of days from that group! especially hoping the fav egg hatches with a pullet and not another cockerel!

out of the clutch of 6 fav eggs in my coop, only 3 are left to 'bake' under the broody. someone has decided to shove eggs out of the box so i moved the broody to a dog crate for her last week of sitting on those eggs. this way i could eliminate her from the possible culprits!

I just posted about my multitude of boys but I thought I'd post pics of my whites and

Any guesses on gender and why (trying to learn) would be MUCH appreciated!

They all look like boys to me. Those are some very red combs. I can see you have the same luck as I usually have!

I have several 6 weekers also , and one who has already started crowing.

Hi everyone. I just wanted to give a quick update. I will be posting a few pictures of the birds I have by tomorrow evening and then in a few weeks try to get more up close shots of individual birds. My plan is to start setting eggs in about three weeks. Its later in the year than I normally like to hatch but I have to start somewhere. My goal is to hatch about 150 salmons and 150 whites out at the minimum.
