Hey there Henry,
Thanks for asking about my BBS LF girlies. I'm happy to report that they are doing just wonderfully

.
I put some of their eggs in the incubator last weekend. I really hope I luck out and I am able to get some of their eggs to hatch. I'd love to have some blue and black chicks... and to be able to get a replacement roo so I can work with these colors - now that would be soooo awesome! I have a couple of back-up plans... but this would certainly be the easiest - and I'm a big fan of easiest

.
I'm thinking I will introduce the hens to the flock soon... maybe tomorrow. I have checked them over really well (for mites) and they've been quarantined for 2 weeks now. I think they would enjoy getting out and free ranging with the rest of the flock.
Your BBS bantams are lovely... hope they are doing well and laying lot's of eggs for you. You have some in the incubator as well if I remember correctly. Fingers crossed for both of us to have great hatches!

I got the Faverolles Fanciers family membership because I really think my 9 year old son will want to show them as well... he is very active in his 4H group... oh, and I got a patch too, I think I'll surprise him and sew it onto his lab coat for him

Thats great! I would be so happy to see Faverolles used more in 4-H and shown more in general. I am selling someone two of my BBS chicks if they hatch well and they will use them for 4-H and showing in MD. I look forward to hearing about how your hatch goes hope you get some! I have 5 eggs due the 1st and 13 due the 11th.

I would use this old saying on lf fav male size. the bigger the better the tighter the sweater as long as you keep your type. 9lbs? you need to keep that boi an breed the pooh out of him!

we don't use scales in the showroom and i certainly don't think there'd be a penalty on that bird for it. What about you Dick?

if emmet just gets too big for you, keep him till late fall and i'll be ever so happy to give him a retirement home in the fl warmth for $$$.

Thanks for the compliment! I definitely plan to keep him around for a while, especially since I was so fortunate to accidentally stumble on to a nice Faverolles in my total ignorance. I have an egg from my Mahogany Fave hen that is one of his favorite girls incubating under a broody right now and I am really curious to see how the chick looks. This will be the first purebred Fav of my own that I will (hopefully) have hatch. It should hatch around the 4th of July.

sad news. i went out to my coop in the back yard this morning to put Mosey out with the girls and when i opened the pop door and expected my EE to be the first or second one out the door, she didn't come out and neither did a few of my other hens and pullets.

a raccoon raided my coop and killed 5 of my girls, one of the hens was my Hat Trick girl i got from Henry. one girl is missing and there were no signs of her anywhere-my little lady Snowy.

my dad came over to help me try to reinforce the door where we believe it could have climbed through the top. and we put welded wire on the rafters so the girls could not get up into the over hanging are to lay eggs. we figured that this may have also been an entry area since it was not covered well with screen mesh. i wish i had taken care of that last year when i first suggested it to the dh that it needed to be done properly to keep things out!

i'm so distraught that i brought the remaining girls inside tonight as a trial of the reinforcements so i could see if anything tried to tamper with it while keeping my birds safe.

So sorry to hear this happened! Raccoons are miserable predators.

That horrible new so sorry to hear that! I am lucky that my dogs have been pretty good about keeping the fox away and I haven't had a coon problem yet. I am sorry you had something like this happen its always terrible to loose birds!

even worse to have to see the destruction, then have to pick it up by yourself, and then have to go to work all day wondering how you are going to try and fix things while trying to keep yourself from crying over the loss of your favorite sweet pullet. i lost my 2nd d'uccle i've ever owned, and it again it was just before it started laying!

she was my little gardening companion!

Chickie'sMoma: Sorry for your losses. These chickens sure are easy to get attached too, especially the ones that make such effort to get close to us. We can only do our best for them & I'm sure you did.

Last weekend, I noticed a small hole leading into my perimeter ground & roof wired, chain link fenced chicken yard; it's also inside our field fenced back & front yard. That same day, I read some things about blk snakes & have been reinforcing the coop roof, coop & yard everysince. For the first time living here in the forest for over 15 years, we've had numerous coon visits in the backyard. The predator reports have been coming up a lot this time of year it seems. Best wishes.

In addition, I sprayed some animal deterent spray around my fence lines, contained my garden scraps compost pile & a few days later got a night movement sensor light going. Haven't seen any sign of the coon since, wish me luck.
